Why Do Churches Not Have to Pay Taxes?

I am wondering how come THEY get special attention...

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION?

You could argue I suppose that charities also get tax exemption but charities are meant as redistribution to the poor.... Churches dont redistribute the money to the poor...

Churches take your money and build fancier churches and give millions of dollars to their pastors...

So tell me why do Churches get AFFIRMATIVE ACTION?

Come on you neolibertarians and religious conservatives...

Please explain.

It was an assurance that religious organizations would survive in the absence of government support. Unfortunately, fundies want government support AND tax exemptions, WHILE they claim to be "oppressed".

It is also a means of preventing the government from being controlled by religion--- if the Catholic Church, for instance, had to pay taxes in the US, the amount of revenue the government was collecting from the Church would surely cause the politicians to factor in Catholic opinion on issues.

It's sad to believe that you don't know how much American churches GIVE to the poor and needy in time and MIILIONS OF DOLLARS. Even sadder that you didnt' do a little research before making an ignorant statement like that.

Well, first off, churches are non-profit organization. Second off, many religious organizations probably couldn't survive if they had to pay taxes, especially property taxes.

There are even secular churches, ya know.

Yes, I'd guess that, out of the billions churchgoers give everyear, a few million goes to Christian poor and needy. Most of it goes to mission trips to help expand the religion.

If you read our Founding Fathers, religion is necessary to the success of the society.

Yers they give lots of money, but not that high percentage wise. And may of their "charities" are mission work concerned with bringing converts in as much as helping them in more physical ways....

The majority of church money is spent on the churches and running them.

There have been some very good reasons stated here in answer to the original post. I would only add that most "churches" are not the mega-ministries you see and hear about on TV. Most have moderate buildings and pay their preacher a meager salary. The average salary for most preachers around here is about $25 - 30 thousand per year. I make about $8000 per year myself. We have to pay taxes on that money. Also, most contribute a great portion back to the congregation. I give back $2000 per year. The rest of what is contributed goes to mission work and charity. Usually when a congregation seeks to do a building upgrade it asks for more contributions from its members and they ante up so as not to have to diminish the congregations missionary and charitable work.

The best reasons stated above were by gonzo and Threedee.

Actually Gonzo's post was a dumb explanation that doesnt make sense. Thats why your stupidity and his adds up to 0.

What Gonzo said was that if Churches paid taxes then they would be able to choose who to give the money to....

No dumbass TAX MONEY is not the same thing as lobbyists....

Tax money go into general pool to fund services... Churches cannot pick and choose WHO IT GIVES ITS TAX MONEY TO.....

If churches were not tax exempt they couldnt even NOT pay taxes...

So please stop it with your fake explanations and learn some comprehension skills...

Thank you. A stupidity score of 0 makes me feel quite well ... and that when combined with somebody elses. I assume yours is much higher.

I am not stupid enough to think that church does not influence politics as some of the politicians are somewhat religious or at least have a religious background or are voted in by religious people. I also know that no church can legally contribute to lobbyists either. That does not disqualify its members from doing so though.

I think in my county there are more churches than convenience stores...
Not sure what that has to do with this but thought I would throw in that there is no shortage of churches.

If you saw Larry King last night they started interviewing these mega pastors with their private jets...beachfront mansions....and $50,000 a weekend shopping sprees for the wives....

Must be a good life to be a pastor...

Actually the premise of my post is..... We got all these neolibertarians and republicans that want to get rid of affirmative action for minorities...

Why dont they lead by example first and get rid of tax exemptions from churches...

I dont even consider churches charities... Churches are businesses...
