Why Republicans in recent years are now claiming America is not a Democracy

That's correct. The state is governed by its governor and legislature. They chose the state's senators prior to the 17th Amendment. Why do you think that amendment was made? There was no vote outside of the state's government for a senator prior to the 17th Amendment.
Again, how does a state have no people?!

Your contempt for democracy is at least consistent.

At least I know people live in states. I have no idea how a Senator represents the state and not the people there.
The people elected a governor and the legislature. Senators prior to the 17th Amendment reflected the political make-up of those political entities.
For example, right now, the state of Arizona, where I live, has a Republican majority legislature and a Democrat governor. We just elected a second Democrat senator. Now, if the 17th Amendment didn't exist, the governor would select the senator, and the legislature would have to confirm the choice. The likelihood would be we'd have 1 Democrat (already serving) and 1 Republican senator since the majority legislature would likely not confirm a second Democrat. The governor would have to compromise.

That is was the whole idea of how the Senate would work prior to the 17th Amendment. It would move towards moderation and compromise rather than extremes based on popular voting. You simply cannot grasp this. It also meant that extreme candidates were far more likely to NOT be chosen as Senators. But, today, we are getting extremists as Senators from both parties.

No surprise you support fascism. You hate democracy.

No, you're not. Define fascism without looking it up.
I actually studied fascism in high school history class. I've taken university courses in European history. I've studied it my own. The fact you think no one can know what "fascism" means shows how fucking stupid you are. Sorry, tired of your silliness.

You must have slept through them then because you know nothing about them.

No historian would support that concept.
Any that is using historical evidence and facts would. Now, a radical Leftist one might not and just make shit up.

For example, Mussolini--indisputably a fascist--had a very close alliance with Stalin and the Soviet Union almost up to Nazi Germany invading that country.

Likewise, Hitler and Stalin had a good economic and political relationship up until Hitler decided to sell that out and invade the Soviet Union.

Birds of a feather, so-to-speak.

The radical Left in academia is loath to admit to fascism being Leftist because they have so much negative baggage historically and politically as it is. They don't need or want fascism heaped on top of all the other heinous disasters Leftist political theory and action has caused.

Your ignorance of history is boring.

Yes, it boils down to a popularity contest.

An irrelevant non sequitur

No, the Senate was supposed to represent the states. The House represented the people, and the President represented the nation.

Irrelevant appeal to popularity. Aside from that, in 19 of our elections for President, the winner did not receive the majority of the vote, 20 if you think Trump didn't win a majority this time. In addition, there are 5 cases where the winner lost the popular vote.
You display such ignorance and do with the confidence of an idiot, You know so little and type so much.
The argument about whether we are a democracy is due to the atavistic Electoral College, Democracies are run by popular vote winners getting the power. Trump won the most votes. Do you know we have more than 2 parties? Trump got the most votes, therefore he won the popular vote. No candidate won 50 percent of the population because we have many who choose not to vote. You can play the game that way if you prefer.
There is a reason they are called State Senators. I am glad you could figure that much out. However when you are a politician you have to consider how legislation affects your state, also how it affects the nation and how it impacts your local citizens. You also have to consider how it impacts other nations.
