Question: Do you believe that the US would be better off as a direct democracy with majority rule and nothing more?
I can't answer that question without first clarifying two things:
1. What the term 'direct democracy' means, i.e., is, and isn't.
2. What the term 'representative democracy' means, i.e., is, and isn't.
A direct democracy requires the elimination of the House of Representatives.
A Representative Democracy does NOT require an electoral college.
Therefore, a representative democracy could include an electoral college, or it could exist without it.
As long as there exists a House of Representatives (or something similar) it doesn't lost lose that status if the EC is eliminated.
I say this because among the right, there appears to be a lack of understanding of the term.
To understand this, let us look it up on the Encyclopedia Britannica:
A representative democracy is a political system in which citizens of a country or other political entity vote for representatives to handle legislation and otherwise rule that entity on their behalf. The elected representatives are in turn accountable to the electorate for their actions. As a...

Representative democracy, is a political system in which citizens of a country or other political entity vote for representatives to handle legislation and otherwise rule that entity on their behalf. The elected representatives are in turn accountable to the electorate for their actions. As a form of democracy, representative democracy exists in contrast to direct democracy, in which all citizens directly vote on laws to be passed and other issues. Most modern countries are representative democracies
Notice that the 'electoral college' is NOT given in the definition. IT is not mentioned anywhere on the page.
However, the term 'direct democracy', according to the Britannica:
The term is also sometimes used for the practice of electing representatives in a direct vote rather than indirectly through an electing body, such as the electoral college,
A direct democracy would require the elimination of the House of Representatives, and I am not for that.
The points, you can have representative democracy without an electoral college, but you can't have a direct democracy with a House of Representatives.
And, proof of this fact is that ALL of the 30 core nations that are considered western developed 'liberal democracies' are 'Representative Democracies,' and none but the United States have an electoral college. You see? The EC is not a requirement in the definition. This is the point I must make given the fact that on a number if internet political debate forums, I've seen some confusion on this point.
So, then, to answer your question, it's 'no', but, we must consider what the term 'direct democracy' is, and isn't, so we are on the same page, okay?
I am FOR the elimination of the Electoral College, because the reason it existed in 1788 no longer exists, it's a dinosaur that needs to be removed.
I am NOT, nor ever, for the elimination of the House of Representatives.
So the answer is NO, with the above clarification.
Here's the thing, often, political ideas need to reflect nuances inherit in political realities, so your question is inadequate as written.
