Why Republicans in recent years are now claiming America is not a Democracy

Question: Do you believe that the US would be better off as a direct democracy with majority rule and nothing more?

I can't answer that question without first clarifying two things:

1. What the term 'direct democracy' means, i.e., is, and isn't.
2. What the term 'representative democracy' means, i.e., is, and isn't.

A direct democracy requires the elimination of the House of Representatives.

A Representative Democracy does NOT require an electoral college.

Therefore, a representative democracy could include an electoral college, or it could exist without it.

As long as there exists a House of Representatives (or something similar) it doesn't lost lose that status if the EC is eliminated.

I say this because among the right, there appears to be a lack of understanding of the term.

To understand this, let us look it up on the Encyclopedia Britannica:

Representative democracy, is a political system in which citizens of a country or other political entity vote for representatives to handle legislation and otherwise rule that entity on their behalf. The elected representatives are in turn accountable to the electorate for their actions. As a form of democracy, representative democracy exists in contrast to direct democracy, in which all citizens directly vote on laws to be passed and other issues. Most modern countries are representative democracies

Notice that the 'electoral college' is NOT given in the definition. IT is not mentioned anywhere on the page.

However, the term 'direct democracy', according to the Britannica:

The term is also sometimes used for the practice of electing representatives in a direct vote rather than indirectly through an electing body, such as the electoral college,

A direct democracy would require the elimination of the House of Representatives, and I am not for that.

The points, you can have representative democracy without an electoral college, but you can't have a direct democracy with a House of Representatives.

And, proof of this fact is that ALL of the 30 core nations that are considered western developed 'liberal democracies' are 'Representative Democracies,' and none but the United States have an electoral college. You see? The EC is not a requirement in the definition. This is the point I must make given the fact that on a number if internet political debate forums, I've seen some confusion on this point.

So, then, to answer your question, it's 'no', but, we must consider what the term 'direct democracy' is, and isn't, so we are on the same page, okay?

I am FOR the elimination of the Electoral College, because the reason it existed in 1788 no longer exists, it's a dinosaur that needs to be removed.

I am NOT, nor ever, for the elimination of the House of Representatives.

So the answer is NO, with the above clarification.

Here's the thing, often, political ideas need to reflect nuances inherit in political realities, so your question is inadequate as written.

No, that's historical revisionism by the Left to try and rid itself of at least one of the many horrible and destructive dictatorships of virtue that they have foisted on the world.
That is not true. Historians disagree with you. Even Mussolini disagrees.

Mussolini and Stalin were tight right up to 1940. If you look at the politics of both, the only difference between the two of real significance is that the fascists were nationalists and the communists were internationalists. Other than that, there's not a nickel's worth of difference.

Mussolini was a leftist...blah blah blah

The state legislatures picked the Senators before 1913. There were times when no senator was selected while the politicians squabbled. Sometimes the state had no senator for extended periods of time. The first attempt to take the power away from the states was in 1826. It was never a good idea. That is probably why Gardner defends it.

Yes, Gardner hates democracy.

Clearly, Republicans can't stand democracy. This is why they are going around making the bogus argument that 'America is not a democracy'.
Clearly leftists/Marxists can't stand a representative republic. This is why they must constantly click their heels and chant "There's no place like democracy. There's no place like democracy. There's no place like democracy."

Because they need to feel good about having only won the popular vote only twice in over 30 years,
Because leftists/Marxists need to sedate themselves while dreaming that the President is chosen by the popular vote and not by the States and the electoral college.

... their voter suppression laws which they have enacted in a number of red states.
... DNC's effective election stealing techniques that rely on no voter ID being required to vote managed to flip the 2020 election.

If someone on the left points this out to them, they will say, 'Well, America is not q democracy, anyway' and shrug their shoulders.
Nope. We say "America is not a democracy" and we roll our eyes. We might laugh at you and mock you as well.

This is the method of fascism, that of demagogues who are telling you this, telling you that the press is the enemy, and anything critical of Trump is TDS, etc.
Once again, leftists/Marxists are compelled to label all political opponents as fascists or Nazis. They have nothing else.

Trump and his surrogates are the shining example of propaganda masters, filling the minds of their flock with thought-terminating cliches and lies. It's Orwellian.
So "drill, baby, drill" is Orwellian in your mind? What else is "Orwellian" about Trump that isn't dwarfed routinely by the DNC?

A democracy is a nation of elected leaders.
Nope. I knew you had no idea what you were talking about.

A republic has a Constitution that guarantees rule of law and the protection of minority rights.

A democracy is mob rule, with no Constitution that isn't just for show, with no protection of minority rights.

The US is not a democracy. The US is a republic.
