Word Association: What's The First Word That Comes To Mind When You Hear 'Trump?'

Hi Politalker,

Hello Sirthinksalot,

It doesn't matter what you 'buy.' Trump actually inspired more apathy than he reduced. Voter turn-out for that election was down. Obama got more votes.

Please refresh my memory. Was Obama on the ballot?

While people latched onto the catch phrases of Trump's campaign, nobody could really define them. What needed to happen to make American great again? Again? What's that mean? When was America great previously? Give us a year. Trump never elaborated. It was very slick. A buzz word phrase that everybody can see what they want to see in it, one which can never be precisely defined. One with no way to verify if it has ever occurred or not.
Everything you just wrote applies perfectly to Obama's "buzz word phrase" Hope and Change. Thanks for that.

Trump inspired people to vote who wanted to destroy government because they don't understand it and don't think anybody should pay taxes.
I understand gov't just fine. One needn't want to "destroy government or think they should pay no taxes" to feel that we have too much of it, we spend too much on it, and that it attempts to do more than we believe it ought to.

One of the reasons nobody wanted to be nailed down to defining when America was previously great is because we have a history full of racism. If America was 'great' for white people, it was very bad for black people in the past.
I think you make a valid point there. What I want to see is a return of economic freedom and prosperity for all Americans. There was a time when most people could find a good paying job without a need for government mandated pay levels and excessive welfare. I'd like a return to previous economic greatness while keeping all the progress we've made in terms of race relations. There are many on your side who are weak debaters and just revert to false accusations of racism instead of legitimate arguments.

I don't believe that. And I totally disagree. You are going to have to back that up before I will believe it. Seeing things that are not there does not make people informed. Latching onto conspiracy theories does not make people informed. Pretending illegal immigration is a national emergency is not informed.

Thanks to Arminius for the link in a different thread

You know, even if a wall was built? It is not going to fix the economy. The only reason Republicans want this is to try to prevent our nation from becoming more Hispanic. Republicans don't like the way the demographics are moving away from them. Republicans are the party of old white guys, not modern America.
You're not a Republican, and for you to "put words in our mouths and attempt to define what motivates us is just plain dishonest.

Wanting to destroy our government is not a hopeful message. But many Trump supporters voted for him because they didn't understand government, didn't like what they don't understand, don't get the big picture of why we have this big government, and wanted to 'shake things up.' They thought Steve Bannon was 'visionary.' What a crock. I will take years to rebuild some of the damage done, especially in the area of diplomacy and matters of State. We put a bull in the china shop.
I already rebutted your claim that Republicans want to "destroy government" so I won't do it again.
