How? I mean, glass is made from sand so "dirt cheap" has a ring of truth, but making heat to make glass takes energy which costs money.

I'm not talking crush it up and recycle it. Use the actual glass vessels over and over. Make them sturdy and sterilize them.
OK so make that $3.50 then. To make them hygienically clean again (per govt regulation) is not as easy as it looks. Simpler to mely the glass and filter out the soot. And there is the cost of transporting these empties to the facility where whatever option would be performed, then back to the bottling plant. And those things weigh a lot more so your diesel costs go up and you have to re-introduce cartons to carry them again. Paper or plastic on that ?
