Every day, somewhere in the United States, someone is shot and killed—lots of someones, really. It’s not an uncommon thing.

This summer, though, it seems to be happening with an eerie regularity. A new week, a new high-profile shooting incident.

Eleven people were hit in midtown Manhattan, but it appears that the shooter—the fifty-eight-year-old Jeffrey Johnson—may have only shot one of them.

The rest, it seems, may have been shot by the two police officers trying to bring Johnson down.

The old way of doing things “was really dumb, because we let people get murdered,” Klinger says. So since Columbine, “the operational doctrine of American law enforcement has shifted away from ‘he’s probably going to stop’ … to ‘someone who is in a public space where there are multiple victims available needs to be stopped as quickly as possible.’”

Those people who support ever more unfettered access to guns would agree, no doubt, and suggest that an armed citizenry could play an invaluable role in stopping shooters like this.

But in this case, two trained officers were the ones who took down Johnson; in the process, nine civilians were wounded.

How many more would it have been if those officers had just been amateurs off the street?

Police officers have to "qualify" at the range once a year. The amateur shooters I know are at the range at least once a month, if not more often. Depending on the "amateur", it may have been none.

So you would have done a better job than the Officers?

Why do you always insist on restating everything? I told you what I think I would have been able to do. But that would have relied on a few changes, like my being able to carry a concealed weapon in NY, my being at the right place at the right time, and not getting shot by the lunatic.

I can't get much clearer than I have already been.

why does copycat troll keep copying my threads?

i hereby award WB --- patience of the YEAR AWARD.

i know i once got pissed you were feeding the troll, but i give you props for your patience on dealing with such a dumb troll WB.

there is no way i could do it. props to you and i meant no disrespect prior.

It seems that there are people who feel the NY situation should been handled, just like this.

No one is saying anything except that I said I think I could have hit ther perp without wounding 9 bystanders.

The "shootout" happened because of what the criminal did, not because someone wanted to handle it like Blazing Saddles.

I agree with who is responsible for this happening; but until you place yourself in a situation where you have someone pointing a gun at you and you fire, you really can't say what would have happened.
The perp is moving, the Police are moving; moving targets put the idea of a "target" into a different light.
Now add in the possibility of the perp shooting back.

And the fact that a ricochet can shatter and the shards could cause several injuried, from one round, and it changes the probablitliy that the wounded were shot by different rounds.

Add to it that they were almost at point blank range.

Do you think video games hone combat skills?

You seem to be the expert. Do they?

And please link up to where I said I have "razor-sharp combat shooting skills"? Oh yeah, you can't.

I can't?

If only I had been there...

...I think I could have hit ther perp without wounding 9 bystanders...

...At the range they were shooting, I wouldn't have missed...

...Add to it that they were almost at point blank range...

I can't?

Being able to hit a grown man from a distance of 15 to 20 feet is not what I would call "razor-sharp combat shooting skills".

So no, you can't. What you can show is that I said I think I would be able to hit the criminal at that range.
