Yep the us sits on it's butt again

Toxic SUV's ? A little U235 never hurt anyone ;)

actually the manufacture and use of SUV's generates quite a bit of toxins. Even when not nuke powered.

LOL. We will have to wait for the Japanese ? to develop that battery tech first and the Chinese to manufacture it for us to use....

You all missed the point of this post.

You do realize that the US has numerous companies producing fuel cells... don't you?

Granted most of their tech is for commercial applications, but it is not as though US companies are sitting around waiting on the Japanese.

well providing home electricity and power for the space shuttle are a bit different .

but still produces less poloution per home than altermative systems in place. Also no distribution losses.
once this system is in place the natural gas in the pipes could be replaced by hydrogen..not too bad of a plan to me.

And less pollution IS a good thing. The efficiency has to be inherent in the device; chemically, you can't run the same reaction and get different results. Natural gas is CH4, a fairly large molecule. H2 is very small and has a bad tendency to leak through porosities and such. It may be better to 'crack' the fuel on site immediately before use to avoid piping losses.

Perhaps. but my point is that the Japanese are trying new tech for our energy problems. Many things need to be tried and there will be no one soloution to our energy needs/wants.

Agreed 100%. And the one thing we CAN do immediately is to conserve - in the board term of both eliminating use and using more efficiently.

No disagreement from me on the conservation.
My state just raised the interstate speed limit from 65 to 70 last year....
Stupit people.
Glad to see the US sales of guzzlers is finally dropping like a rock though.

this will be painful any way we go. Less pain to solve it now than later though.
