Yoga:Hindu in origin

Yoga is hindu in origin, and is a religious practice

its origin may be religious, but its usage has spread beyond the religious...some religious and some non-religious

i teach a non-religious form of yoga and have for decades

yoga in and of itself can help the physical as well as spiritual self

so what is your point?

Somehow we are supposed to equate it to government enforced prayer toward Mecca and start worrying about yuppies in hot rooms doing some fancy push ups.

ok, silly question, if yoga started as hindu, then why mecca

of course, in such things, reason is usually not expected:eek:

It's an analogy.

If religious practices can be deemed NOT religious on arbitrary and politically motivated basis, where does it stop?

I realize Meccas goes with Islam and not yoga or hinduism, but that's where the metaphorical aspect comes in.

WHy are you practicing the protective stupidity of crimestop?

http://www.orwelltoday.com/crimestop.shtml
Crimestop means the faculty of stopping short, as though by instinct, at the threshold of any dangerous thought. It includes the power of not grasping analogies, of failing to perceive logical errors, of misunderstanding the simplest arguments if they are inimical to Ingsoc, and of being bored or repelled by any train of thought which is capable of leading in a heretical direction. Crimestop, in short, means protective stupidity.

Yoga isn't politically motivated. It's more like taking Martial Arts. In some cases, Zen Buddhists for example, it is part and parcel of their meditation practices. However some people take it to keep in shape and learn how to kick butt. Since some people practice the Martial Arts as part of their religious practices, it must mean that going to an MMA tournament is the same thing as Church in your scenario, and because so many do it we should start worrying about Mecca and Olam Ha Ba.

Dedefining religious acts is politically motivated.

Inane.

Bastardizing religious practices into popularized exercise phenomena of the yuppie isn't quite as "harmful" as you want us to believe. If anything Hindi practitioners may be insulted by those who use it only as physical exercise while wholly ignorant, and willfully so, of the "religious experience".

I think you underestimate the number who are actually mindful of the spiritual/ quasi rational components.

Inane!

And? What would be wrong with that? We have this thing called the First Amendment. If that is how they wish to spend their spiritual energy, you can do nothing to change it.

The vast majority of people who practice Yoga in the US do it because it is popular right now, not because they really feel closer to God while doing it.

The newest phenomena in this ever-driven popularization is the "hot yoga", where you do it in a room heated to 103 degrees Fahrenheit so you'll sweat more. I'm sure some yogi out there is rolling in his grave. These people aren't doing it to get closer to god, they're doing it because Vans aren't in style anymore and they can't be out of style.

I don't want to change it. I don't see the need to mislabel it as NOT religious.

Mostly they do consider the spiritual aspests and mindfully consider those.

You don't know everybody. many of them do consider it part of their spirituality.

This is Like Adam's Jews who are too cynical to actually believe in Judaism. Silly? yes.

"Oy, Olam Ha Ba, Who has the energy?"

Right, because you know everybody. It's a cultural phenomena like Jazz, Rock 'n' Roll, big heeled clogs, and what was that religion of Madonna's? She may still follow it, but it's going out of style and people that were formerly part of it are now sweating in hot rooms doing yoga movements.

I wonder what it is like running around panicking every time something becomes popular that you feel is misrepresented. Who cares if this is religious? If most people are doing it as a religious practice, as you say, then it isn't any of your business. And if they aren't it still is nothing of your concern.

Because you know everybody? You asked them all if they know me? Good one. I do actually.

You don't need to "know everybody" to watch cultural phenomena like this come and go. There will always be a few who still practice Tai Chi in the park, but they'll be heaped in scorn by those who used to, but now stretch out in hot rooms.

Sounds like your setting up a day of shooting for a porno.
