Okay, we all know that government is infamous for fraud, waste, and abuse. What insane, useless, and hopefully hilarious, examples can you find? After all, with Musk and DOGE this will be a topic in the news in short order...

I'll start with this one: $75,000 for flying lizards--of a sort...

Some "scientists" at Harvard got $75,000 to do that "research."

Funny you should ask. I just posted this..

I actually think it would be a good idea for a civilian that had experience working with the military that saw firsthand (like me) the fraud, corruption and waste that goes on inside.
A career military guy understands that the “military“ thing to to is sweep it all under the rug rather than fix it.
I saw incompetent docs that literally committed gross negligence and/or malpractice that were swiftly reassigned to another duty station, which is the worst possible thing that could happen to them as opposed to a civilian doc in the private sector who’d have his license revoked.
I witnessed rampant payroll fraud .
I witnessed clinic commanders falsifying records to make their clinic “look good”.
And the generals knew exactly what was going on because it made them look good.
It disgusted me.

Yea, that sort of thing goes on all the time. Best I don't get started on the one that I ended up peripherally involved in that started, for me, with a call from the State Department, and every call there after about it, starting with "You did nothing wrong..." I heard that a good number of GS-12+ civilian side people in the DoD went to jail for it though...

I actually knew an independent medical equipment maintenance/repair guy who refused to do work for Fort Richardson because they insisted he do substandard work that he knew would fail.
He told them to find someone else with less experience that was hungry enough.

Depts of energy, education, the TSA, NTSB, homeland security just to name a few off the top of my head

Billions of dollars to arm and support genocidal Israel
Billions of dollars to attack the Russians through Ukrainian proxies.

A couple of items that tax dollars are being spent on:

$100,000 to study if tequila or gin makes sunfish more aggressive

Nearly $1M to study if cocaine makes Japanese quail more sexually promiscuous

$750,000 to find out if the moon landing line was “One small step for Man” or “One small step for ‘A’ man”— the study was inconclusive.

We spent $28 million on giving the Afghan Army uniforms, including something like $6 of that on designing them a new camouflage scheme for their uniforms...

Using a proprietary camouflage pattern and a different uniform style resulted in significantly higher costs—up to 43 percent higher

I think we need to start offing lots of lawyers...

I'm sure you meant "laying off", right?

Playing golf at your own resort and making the American taxpayer pay top rates for your own personal profit even in the off season to house the Secret Service and accompanying government workers

For Trump raking in millions, and now that he has full immunity, with zero consequences watch the emoluments flow, the golf junkets will look penny ante in comparison

Adjusted for inflation, federal spending per person has grown from $4,333 in 1965 to $19,594 in 2023.

In an economy of scale - we should be able to spend less per person.
