Police have released the name of a 3-year-old boy who died in Flint after apparently finding a loaded gun and accidentally shooting himself.

Flint police Chief James Tolbert tells The Flint Journal that Karmelo Johnson was found dead after shooting himself in the head with a 9mm pistol at his great-grandparents’ home.

Police say a preliminary investigation indicated that the child found the unsecured weapon at the home, in the 1300 block of Columbia Dr., and that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

Tolbert says the gun wasn’t registered and investigators believe the adults present at the time weren’t aware there was a handgun in the home. Tolbert has said his agency was seeking help from federal authorities to trace the gun and find out how it got into the home.

No arrests have been announced and it was not immediately clear if anyone would face charges in connection with the death.

A White County family’s trip running errands in Crossville Monday afternoon turned horribly wrong when a handgun being handled by a child discharged, striking a sibling who later died as a result of his injuries.

The Crossville Police Department confirmed the incident took place around 2:50 p.m. in the parking lot of the Verizon Wireless store off N. Main St. Four children were present when the mishap occurred. The three survivors were traumatized by the incident but otherwise unhurt.

Not much is known about the incident other than the family of six were in Crossville and among their stops was a visit to the cell phone retail outlet to pay a bill. The mother and stepfather stepped inside, leaving in their van four siblings, ages nine and under, and the mother’s purse.

A handgun was removed from the purse and, according to reports, one of the children was attempting to unload the gun — removing an ammunition magazine but leaving one bullet in the chamber of the gun — when the weapon discharged, striking a seven-year-old in the head.

Reportedly, there were adults in the parking lot when the incident occurred, and frantic calls to E-911 were made. Crossville Police, Fire Department and Cumberland County Emergency Medical Services rushed to the scene in response to a child bleeding from the head and not breathing.

Life support measures were immediately started and the child rushed to the helipad near Cumberland Medical Center where the child was directly airlifted and flown to The University of Tennessee Medical Center.

A short time later, police received word that the child had died from his injuries.

Authorities did not release the name of the person who died at the highway stop, but Finicum's daughter confirmed it was Finicum, 55, of Cane Beds, Arizona, one of the cowboy-hat wearing faces of the takeover.

"My dad was such a good good man, through and through," said Arianna Finicum Brown, 26, one of Finicum's 11 children. "He would never ever want to hurt somebody, but he does believe in defending freedom and he knew the risks involved."

Braveheart is on the mend.

The canine – who survived a massive blizzard and two gunshot wounds with his companion, Faithful – is out of surgery and “doing well,” according to shelter staff at the Liberty Humane Society.

The Liberty Humane Society issued the following update:

“Braveheart, the dog who was shot before this weekend’s blizzard, is out of surgery and doing well at the vet’s office. The bullet ricocheted off a rib and exited his body, which is very good. The vet has closed his wounds and he will remain hospitalized with drains in place through at least the weekend.”

The shelter is conducting a fundraiser to help defray the cost of Braveheart’s treatment.

Anchorage patrol officers witnessed two scenes of gunfire involving at least three cars Saturday in Anchorage leaving two people injured.

An APD sergeant in near 4th Avenue and Gambell Street reported that she heard several gunshots. Almost immediately after her report, another sergeant saw "a dark-colored pickup run a red light and leave the same area at a high rate of speed."

As more police officers responded to the scene, an officer near Karluk Street and 8th Avenue saw a white four-door sedan traveling east on 9th Avenue and heard several gunshots.

"The officer then saw a dark silver sedan get behind the white sedan," police wrote. "A male in the silver car was seen hanging outside of the vehicle, with his upper body above the roof (while the vehicle was in motion), firing shots at the white car."

Another patrol officer began pursuing the silver sedan which was speeding down the Glenn Highway. Police had to slow down twice because of drivers who would not yield to police.

"By the time the officers caught up with the silver sedan, it had crashed at Bragaw and the Glenn Highway and the two occupants had run from the area on foot," police wrote. "A perimeter was set up, and a K9 track was conducted, but the two were not caught."

While the K9 track was being conducted, two victims with gunshot wounds were dropped off at a local hospital. The male victim had a single gunshot wound and the female victim had been shot in the leg.
