More people shot to death in Tennessee than killed by vehicles
More people died from gunshots than car accidents in Tennessee and 20 other states during 2014. Some advocates say that trend will spread nationwide in 2016.
During the last decade, gun-related deaths — homicides, suicides and accidental shootings — have increased in Tennessee, while vehicle-related deaths — crashes and pedestrians struck by vehicles — have declined.
Gun-related deaths in Tennessee rose from 865 in 2004 to 1,020 in 2014, according to the latest data available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In that same time period, vehicle-related deaths dropped from 1,191 in 2004 to 906 in 2014, according to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security.
Advocates for increased regulation of the gun industry point to those opposing trends as proof government regulation can make an industry safer without obliterating it.

4-YEAR-OLD BOY DIES AFTER SHOOTING HIMSELF EARLIER IN WEEK
HOUSTON -- A 4-year-old boy who was in the hospital after accidentally shooting himself earlier this week has passed away.
Bryson Hernandez's family released a statement Thursday night to pass along the heartbreaking news.
Investigators said the shooting happened on Tuesday. Bryson found his grandfather's gun and started playing with it when the gun accidentally discharged, officials said.
Below is the full statement released by Bryson's family.
"Bryson, our sweet little boy who was loved by everyone he ever met, passed away earlier today and we are utterly heartbroken. Bryson really loved two things in his life: his family - especially his little sisters - and Iron Man. He was very protective of his sisters and always there for them, teaching the right way to cross the street and hugging them when they cried. Iron Man was his favorite superhero. He had the costume, the pillow, everything.
He looked up to Iron Man because he was strong, fearless and he dedicated his life to helping others. Today, through the most horrible of circumstances, Bryson got his wish to become Iron Man himself. He was strong and fearless as he was fighting for his life, and now he will be a hero too: as an organ donor, his life will save the lives of several other children. Soon he will be laid to rest in his Iron Man costume, with his head on his Iron Man pillow, since we know he wouldn't have had it any other way.

Relatives say a man shot to death by a motorist he tried to assist in western North Carolina leaves behind an infant son.
The shooting happened Friday in Catawba County during the first big blizzard to hit the East Coast of 2016.
Sheriff Coy Reid said in a phone interview with the Associated Press a driver who spun out on ice became belligerent and began firing after people approached to help.
Jefferson Heavner, who lived in the area, drove up in his pickup truck with a couple of people to see if they could help. The sheriff said Heavner and the others could tell that Lee was intoxicated and decided to call authorities instead of pushing his car out. Lee then became belligerent.
"They were going to let the cops handle it, and that's when he pulled a pistol and started shooting," Reid said.

Kenneth Haskins, 58 - who suffers from severe disfigurement - allegedly torched his apartment block in protest after being accused of performing sex acts at his window.

An 18-year-old woman found dead this week in an apartment she shared with her boyfriend died of a single gunshot wound to her chest, suburban Lansing police said Tuesday afternoon.
Summer Mitchell was found dead in an apartment in the 17700-block of Commercial Avenue on Sunday.
Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services responded to the scene and processed the apartment for evidence. The pistol and other evidence were recovered from the scene, Lansing police said.

Police believe the gunshot was self-inflicted, and there was no foul play involved, said Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Keith Flores.
At 1:15 p.m. Jan. 21, police responded to a residence in the 9000 block of Yorkshire Drive, in the Saline area. They were not able to interview the man because of the extent of his injuries.
The incident remains under investigation as police wait for autopsy and toxicology reports, Flores said.

Officers were summoned to the area of 129 Fenn St. at about 1:30 a.m. for a report of an unresponsive male. First responders immediately began performing CPR. The victim was taken to Berkshire Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A 47-year-old Yakima woman who died of a gunshot wound has been identified as Anna M. Hargett, Yakima County Coroner Jack Hawkins told The Yakima Herald.
Hargett was shot “in her upper body” on the 1100 block of Roosevelt Avenue.
The same bullet that hit Hargett also injured a 42-year-old woman, although Hawkins did not know her name or current condition.
