A Malakoff area woman received a life-threatening injury when she was accidentally shot, Henderson County Sheriff Ray Nutt said. The person who fired the shot was her 23-year-old son. The names of the people involved were not released, and the information is being forwarded to the Henderson County District Attorney's Office for possible prosecution.

Nutt said the shooting was the result of an unusual chain of events. A man, living in a residence on County Road 1220 apparently had grown annoyed at recent vandalism in the area, including his mailbox. At about 10:30 p.m., the resident heard a noise outside, and went to check it out. Outside, he saw a car drive away, then later return from the opposite direction.

When the vehicle returned, the angry resident fired a shot in the air, Nutt said, and shouted at the people in the vehicle that he didn't want them messing with his mailbox. About that time, his son, reacting to the commotion, fired a shot, apparently in belief that the first round had come from someone in the vehicle. The son's bullet struck his mother.

A 52-year-old man who had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the upper body tried to get into a hospital building, but found the doors locked.

Police say he fired a shot, breaking the glass, then fired another shot when hospital personnel tried to help him.

“He gets out of his car in front of the hospital and attempts to gain entry to the hospital. He finds the doors locked, so he apparently fires a bullet, a round at the glass doors, breaks the doors, gains entry into the hospital,” says police spokesman Don Gotthardt.

“Once inside, he encounters hospital personnel who immediately realize he’s in need of medical attention. When they go to render aid, he displays a handgun again and fires another bullet inside the hospital. Fortunately, that did not hit anyone.”

Hospital personnel quickly convinced him to give up his handgun.

Gotthardt says the man was then stabilized and taken to another hospital for treatment and evaluation.

The man had tried to get into the Pavilion II entrance to the hospital, not the emergency room entrance.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A man fatally stabbed a police dog while brawling with officers at a busway in the Pittsburgh suburbs before police opened fire and killed the suspect, authorities said.
An investigation was underway Monday to determine whether officers were justified in killing Bruce Kelley Jr., 37.

Port Authority of Allegheny County police contend Kelley Jr. and his father, Bruce Kelley Sr., 60, were drinking alcohol Sunday in a busway gazebo in Wilkinsburg before they fought with officers, who sent a K-9 after the younger man. Police killed Kelley Jr. after he fatally stabbed the dog, Aren, a 5-year-old German shepherd with four years on the transit police force. Kelley's father was jailed Monday on aggravated assault and other charges. Online court records don't list an attorney for Bruce Kelley Sr., who was unable to post $300,000 bail. The officers have been placed on paid leave pending an internal review and a ruling by the district attorney on whether deadly force was justified.

WILKINS TOWNSHIP, Pa. —A shooting Monday afternoon left one person in critical condition and brought a large police response to the Laurel Village Apartments.

An arrest warrant was filed by Wilkins Township police for Timothy Chris Brown, 27. He will face aggravated assault, attempted homicide, recklessly endangering another person and persons not to possess, use manufacture and control charges. According to the criminal complaint, police responded to the apartment building for a shot fired call where they found Aaron Thorton-Blalock, 21, bleeding outside the building.

"Oh it was terrible, it was terrible. I just pray that this young man makes it. I've been praying hard and it was terrible. It was terrible, he laid there and said my cousin shot me," a witness told Pittsburgh's Action News 4.

Dozens of residents of the Laurel Village apartments were effectively locked out or locked inside as police combed each apartment for signs of Brown. Ultimately Brown was not found in any of the apartments and the lockdown was lifted just before 6 p.m. Monday.

“We were able to determine there was a scuffle and a shooting that occurred on the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] floor of the building," said Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt. Thorton-Blalock was in stable condition by Monday night according to his brother, who said he was still too sedated to talk."
