The Sheriff’s Office told the station that the mom and the friend stepped outside while the 4-year-old and two other younger children were left. That’s when the gun went off.

Authorities say the boy shot himself in the head.

TULSA- A man accidentally shot himself in the chin in south Tulsa Saturday and gun enthusiasts say it could've been prevented.

A full-scale investigation launched by a single gunshot that police say wasn't supposed to go off.

Neighbors near 66th and South Rockford say cop cars at the home isn't a rare sight.

"There's been a lot of traffic in and out, there's a younger crowed that hang out there", said Cody McCall. "Lots of people in and out at suspicious times."

Police say a 20-year-old male was playing with a gun and shot himself in the chin. The bullet exited through his mouth.

"I wasn't sure what to think, but I definitely didn't expect a shooting." said McCall.

It's a scenario the guys here at 2A Shooting Center see all the time. They say accidents like these can be prevented with some simple education.

"A lack of training is primarily the reason why you hear about accidents like that." said 2A manager Geoff Portman.

Portman works with guns every single day. He says responsible gun owners are constantly checking to see if their gun is loaded and keeping fingers off the trigger.

But he says making a conscious decision to shoot is the true key factor.

"That level of respect is on par with that level of lethality." he said. "So understanding that and handling that firearm is that fashion...you'll be safe and everyone around you will be safe."

Police say the man's injuries are non-life threatening. Neighbors say they hope it's a lesson learned.

"I definitely think it's a big concern especially with people with families. I mean that's not something you want around your children."

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A young Onslow County man will serve some time for accidentally shooting and killing his friend.

It’s a story all too common for the US.

In a CDC report from February, 505 people died in 2013 in accidental shootings.

A not-for-profit gun violence archive reports 983 people were involved in accidental shootings this year alone.

Last year, 19-year-old Jacob Kohler, a former high school football player at white oak, became part of the statistics.

His family talked with WNCT about his friend being sentenced in his death.

“Jacob was such a good person; he was a friend to so many people, just a caring, loving, big teddy bear,” said Christina Kohler.

Jacob Kohler had high aspirations of joining law enforcement and a passion for serving others.

He also enjoyed guns and even worked at a local gun shop.

That was until about six months ago when Jacob’s friend, Victor Santana, began playing with one of Jacob’s guns at his home and accidentally shot Jacob in the stomach.

Jacob died after being taken to the hospital.

“I taught Jacob never point a fire arm at somebody even if you’re sure it’s unloaded, but I never did teach him don’t ever let somebody point a firearm at you and that’s what happened in this case,” said his father, Kevin Kohler.

For the Kohler’s, their son’s loss continues to be a struggle.

“My son being painted in a crime that was just senseless and needless and easily prevented, it’s heartbreaking,” Kevin Kohler said.

Which is why Jacob’s father addressed Santana in an Onslow County courtroom on Tuesday.

Cameras were not allowed for Santana’s sentencing after he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

While reading a two page letter, Kevin Kohler forgave the 20-year-old, even asking the judge to not sentence him to any jail time.

“I just wish people would take firearm safety real serious, our loss is our loss regardless of what victor loses.”

Santana spoke to Jacob’s family apologizing to them saying he failed them.

Santana will spend time in prison.

A judge sentenced him to serve 150 days.

He’ll be on probation following that, plus have to give ten speeches to high school students on his personal story and the danger of picking up firearms without proper training.

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – A young Onslow County man pleads guilty in the accidental shooting death of his friend.

20-year-old Victor Santana pleaded guilty Tuesday morning to involuntary manslaughter in an Onslow County courtroom.

Jacksonville police charged Santana last November.

Prosecutors said Santana was in an apartment and saw a gun lying on blankets and didn’t think it was loaded. Santana pulled the trigger and shot 19-year-old Jacob Kohler in the stomach.

Kohler died at the hospital.

The plea agreement includes a potential split sentence and restitution for Kohler’s funeral costs.

A 3-year-old boy continues to fight for his life in a Little Rock hospital, 3 days after shooting himself with a handgun .

Little Jett Osborne is in ICU at Arkansas Children's Hospital, where he remains in a medically-induced coma.

According to a gofundme page set up by friends to help the family with medical expenses, the boy's mother was visiting a friend when he found a .22 handgun, which went off and struck him between the eyes. The bullet exited the top left side of his head.

Police say it happened at a home in the 6000 block of Summerwood Lane. They were alerted by a 911 call reporting the shooting.

By the time they arrived, the boy was already on his way to St. Michael's hospital. He was flown by AngelOne to the hospital from there.

According to the Support Jett Osburn gofundme page, Jett remains on a respirator. He is moving his right side, and "When he starts coming to, he tries to pull out the tubes, etc. Movement is good, but we would love to see him move both sides."

But the battle is far from over. Jett has received blood transfusions and doctors are monitoring swelling.

Police have not released any information regarding the investigation into the shooting, or whether any charges will be filed.

Cody Throneberry, 20, was arrested and charged with felony involuntary manslaughter.

Throneberry accidentally shot his friend, Owen Hicks, 20, at Throneberry’s home, Floyd County police reported.

Hicks died from a gunshot wound to his head.

An investigation by Floyd County police concluded Throneberry didn’t have ill intent when the 9mm pistol went off, and the manslaughter charge is a proper fit to the crime, officer Byron McCarley said.

“It was an unlawful act that was committed that plays off pointing a gun at another,” McCarley said.

Throneberry is additionally charged with misdemeanor charges of pointing a pistol at another and reckless conduct.

knowing that the 2nd Amendment is the check on the federal government by not providing the gov any single ability to infringe on the right to bear arms, one has to be a total statist authoritarian moron to be in favor of any restriction at all, even large capacity gun magazines.

I think some restrictions are warranted. I am against gun regulation that limits the types of weapons or magazines and I am against gun regulation that prevents people on the terrorist watch list from owning guns. It's a slippery slope, the Executive branch can put anyone on the list and they wouldn't be able to buy guns. It needs a check and balance, like Judicial review. If they made it so the Executive branch had to prove it to the Judicial branch, then I'd be okay with it. However, that defeats the point, which is to prevent crimes from happening or to at least lessen the damage a mass murderer or terrorist could do. I think that's an unrealistic expectation.

What I would like to see is gun regulation like a driver's license. An aspiring gun owner has to go through a firearm proficiency course, learn the "civilian rules of engagement", get a background check and a psych eval. Right now civilians don't even get arrested for shooting someone in self-defense. A cop on the other hand gets suspended and investigated every single time. I think civilians should be arrested and investigated as standard operating procedure. Some people can be too blind to drive a car and some people can be too crazy to own a gun.
