Another art school closes.

The University of the Arts in Philadelphia will shutter for good June 7 after nearly 150 years in operation. The school, which over the years educated the likes of Alex Da Corte, Louise Fishman, Irving Penn, Stephen Powers, Charles Sheeler, Neil Welliver, and Deborah Willis, struggled financially in the wake of the pandemic, as did other art schools in the US. Too, the University of the Arts in recent years had seen a high rate of turnover in high-level administration in its admissions and advancement offices and in the roles of dean and, perhaps most crucially, president.

I have seen some of his paintings. Quite competent and typical of students who enter an art school.
Agreed. He had at least some talent. I am not trying to damn Hitler with faint praise, though he does deserve a damning. He was just not a fully developed artist yet.

For all I know, he would have been one of the great artists of his time... But more likely he would have been a passable artist who did nice work.

Either way, it would have been better. It is a strong argument for education.

Unanswered questions for students and faculty

UArts scheduled separate town halls Tuesday for students, faculty and staff where administrators would share information but not take any questions, faculty members said. The town halls were abruptly canceled minutes before they were scheduled to start, faculty and students told The Washington Post.

Schools that are closing typically submit an approved teach-out plan — a roadmap for how to wind-down operations and ensure fair treatment of students with degrees in progress — to an accrediting body, but UArts has not done so, according to MSCHE. The plans often include partner schools that will absorb students affected by the closure to ensure the transfers are as seamless as possible.

What value do art schools or an art degree offer?
You are confusing a college education with an apprenticeship.
But, there are lots of jobs in galleries, museums and art schools. There are art classes in many high schools too. They need teachers.

The fallout was immediate and painfully familiar to instructors in the struggling world of arts education, where dozens of respected schools have closed over the last decade. The University of the Arts closure would affect 1,149 students and nearly 700 employees total, but it was also the second major Philadelphia arts institution this year to end its programs. In January, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts said it would stop granting degrees after its 2025 graduating class.

Brandonpresident, have Hunter start one.

Don't agree. Most professional artists went to an art academy.
Do you ever not lie?

"

Only 16 percent of working artists have arts-related bachelor's degrees. Though arts graduates may acquire additional opportunities and skills from attending art school, arts graduates are likely to graduate with significant student loan debt, which makes working as an artist difficult, if not impossible."

Closure of Philadelphia Art School Spurs Review by State Attorney General

The Pennsylvania attorney general’s office and state lawmakers said Friday that they were reviewing the abrupt closure of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, which blindsided students and faculty members.

“We are very concerned by the sudden closure of the University of the Arts,” said Brett Hambright, a spokesman for Michelle A. Henry, the attorney general of Pennsylvania. “We are reviewing the circumstances of the closure and any transfer or loss of assets.”

Other state lawmakers are calling for additional investigations into the university’s collapse.
