Baltimore bridge hit by container ship, major collapse

The same ship crashed in a different port in '16.

I'm thinking Sailor was drinking again.

They'd never let Sailor anywhere near the bridge of a ship like that.

He'd be lucky to be employed on a ship that size as a janitor or dishwasher.

You stupid jackass. This is baltimore. Maybe it could be fixed in a month, but baltimore is black-run and this will take 20 years. The black civil engineers in this city can't even read or do 3rd grade arithmetic.

The rebuilding will be a federal project for the most part.....but America is now a cant do nation.....rebuilding will likely take years.

How to escape if your car goes underwater

It’s a nightmare scenario for drivers: Your car leaves the road and plunges into water, transforming your vehicle into a sinking trap.

The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge into the Patapsco River early Tuesday may have stoked fears that you could encounter a similar catastrophe in your own car. Officials with the Baltimore fire department said sonar has detected vehicles submerged in the water, but it was unclear whether anyone was inside.

A distress call from the freighter that crashed into the bridge and caused the collapse gave officials time to halt more vehicle traffic over the bridge, said Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D). As of midday Tuesday, two workers had been rescued from a crew that was repairing potholes on the Key Bridge; six workers were still missing.

In the right conditions, drivers who stay calm have a chance to escape an underwater car. In 2013, a 22-year-old woman from Calvert County, Md., survived after her car went off the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and fell 27 feet into the water.

Thermal physiologist Gordon Giesbrecht, a retired University of Manitoba professor with an expertise in vehicle submersion and hypothermia, said passengers have one minute to rescue themselves from a sinking car. Once the vehicle becomes even partially submerged, the odds of survival are slim.

“A minute is kind of an average number,” Giesbrecht said. “So the windows will certainly work for 60 seconds, but if you know what you’re doing, you can open that window in 10 or 15 seconds.”

He said travelers should memorize the acronym SWOC:

Seat belts off.

Windows open.

Out immediately.

Children first.

“A lot of people think you should open the doors, which you shouldn’t,” Giesbrecht said. “The car is just going deeper and deeper, and once the water gets up against the window, then you won’t even be able to open the window. So you’ve got to get that window open as soon as you can.”

Giesbrecht said electric windows should still operate within a minute “because your ignition was on.”

When helping children, push the oldest out first so you can help the youngest passengers. Giesbrecht said it is easier to push than pull passengers out, so remain in the car until your dependents have safely evacuated.

Cars in deep water typically sink nose first, so you can buy a few more seconds by exiting out a back window. If there’s a release button in the front seat for a rear hatch, then you can escape through the back, but don’t waste time trying to locate it.

The bridge is about 15 minutes from where I live.

Looks like the ship had engine trouble and could not steer.

The bridge wreckage has blocked shipping to the Harbor. This could cause major supply chain interruptions for weeks or months.

As soon as Pothole Pete finishes chestfeeding, he will take matters into hand.

This is a BLACK SWAN event.

Black swans normally come out of the world of finance (not military). The standard operating procedures for all U.S. ports, harbors, and bays that transit commerce and military activities are supposed to maintain an incredible level of discipline, rigor and awareness for these very type events to not occur (ever!), yet here we are.

There are harbor masters for every single one of these transit points in America that are in charge of assuring the safety of navigation…start there.

Multiple intel sources: Baltimore bridge collapse was an “absolutely brilliant strategic attack” on US critical infrastructure - most likely cyber - & our intel agencies know it. In information warfare terms, they just divided the US along the Mason Dixon line exactly like the Civil War.

Second busiest strategic roadway in the nation for hazardous material now down for 4-5 years - which is how long they say it will take to recover. Bridge was built specifically to move hazardous material - fuel, diesel, propane gas, nitrogen, highly flammable materials, chemicals and oversized cargo that cannot fit in the tunnels - that supply chain now crippled.

Make no mistake: this was an extraordinary attack in terms of planning, timing & execution.

The two critical components on that bridge are the two load-bearing pylons on each end, closest to the shore. They are bigger, thicker and deeper than anything else. These are the anchor points and they knew that hitting either one one of them would be a fatal wound to the integrity of the bridge. Half a mile of bridge went in the river - likely you will have to build a new one. Also caused so much damage to the structural integrity of the bottom concrete part that you cannot see & won’t know until they take the wreckage apart. Structural destruction likely absolute.

Attack perfectly targeted.

“They have figured out how to bring us down. As long as you stay away from the teeth of the US military, you can pick the US apart. We are arrogant and ignorant - lethal combination. Obama said they would fundamentally change America and they did.We are in a free-fall ride on a roller coaster right now - no brakes - just picking up speed.”

The footage shows the cargo ship never got in the approach lane in the channel. You have to be in the channel before you get into that turn. Location was precise/deliberate: chose a bend in the river where you have to slow down and commit yourself - once you are committed in that area there is not enough room to maneuver. hould have had a harbor pilot to pilot the boat. You are not supposed to traverse any obstacles without the harbor pilot.

They chose a full moon so they would have maximum tidal shift - rise and fall. Brisk flow in that river on a normal day & have had a lot of rain recently so water was already moving along at a good pace.

Hit it with enough kinetic energy to knock the load-bearing pylon out from under the highway - which fatally weakens the span and then 50 percent of the bridge fell into the water. All these factors when you look at it - this is how you teach people how to do this type of attack and there are so few people left in the system who know this. We have a Junior varsity team on the field.

Tremendous navigational obstruction. Huge logistical nightmare to clean this up. Number of dead is tragic but not the whole measure of the attack.

That kind-of bridge constantly under repair - always at night because there is so much traffic and they cannot obstruct that during the day. So concern is for repair guys who were on foot (out of their vehicles) working who may now be in the water - 48 degrees at most at this time of year.

When you choke off Baltimore you have cut the main north-south hazardous corridor (I95) in half. Now has to go around the city - or go somewhere else.

To move some of that cargo through the tunnel you may be able to get a permit but those are slow to get and require an escort system that is expensive and has to be done at night. For every $100 dollars that goes into the city, $12 comes from shipping. Believe this will cripple the city of Baltimore at a time when they do not have the resources to recover.

The question will then be about how you will blame it on Biden.

I will note this about Biden, and I don't blame him for the accident, that Biden took very little time to make a public response to this accident and pledge federal support unlike his dithering for days and basically doing nothing with the East Palestine Ohio train derailment. I guess the difference is Baltimore and the surrounding area are heavily Democrat, while East Palestine Ohio is heavily Republican. Seems Biden, just as he always does, panders to those he thinks will vote for him while kicking to the curb and not giving a shit about anyone who he thinks won't.

Because Biden is trying to buy votes, as usual... Baltimore is heavily Democrat and deep blue, East Palestine Ohio--as but one example--is Republican and red. Biden has spent his whole career worried about one thing: Joe Biden. What it takes to get reelected is all he's worried about. If his throwing money at Democrats will get their vote, Biden's throwing money at Democrats.

Well I dont actually know that this means that they will not go after the ship owner, but this may as well have been pilot error for dropping the anchor.

However: as a principle moral hazard is a thing....those who cause disasters can not be allowed to skate away without being charged, as was done with the Great Recession and many other times.

Normally the state would pay 10% and need to sign off on the plan....perhaps what was being said is that they will not pay and perhaps that they dont get a say in the rebuilding.

We need clarification.

This is nonsensical. Biden needs to try to win Ohio. Maryland will go blue regardless. He doesn't need to fight for Democrat votes in solidly blue Maryland.

I mean, really - what in the world are you talking about? Do you also think Biden will selfishly spend all of this time campaigning in L.A. and New York City?

The thing that has my attention is that if this was terrorism that was the exact right time to cut engine power.

So if this was not terrorism there is the "what are the odds" question.
