Can Artificial Intelligence have free will?

If this were true we would never expand knowledge. Even Einstein would never come up with a unique idea, we'd still be staring at magic fire created by lightening because we wouldn't be able to figure out that when certain rocks click together they'll form a spark... we weren't taught it, so we couldn't parrot it...

yes the "language net" understanding of consciousness is not accurate.

there is understanding that transcends words. we simply find the words after the fact of having an insight or intention.

yes.

like they say, technology is morally neutral, it just matters how it's put to use.

well the people implementing a. i. are totalitarian fascist anti-human genociders.

that's the issue.

AI is a programming technique, not an 'implementation'.
There is nothing totalitarian about using AI to filter reports for a company.
There is nothing totalitarian about using AI to build a program that plays chess well.
There is nothing totalitarian about using AI to automate Google searches, as ChatGPT does.
There is nothing totalitarian about using AI to build a speech recognition library or a language translation library.

You think, for example, the Alexa service is 'totalitarian'? No one forces you to buy Alexa devices, and Alexa itself is nothing more than speech recognition coupled with programs people wrote (called 'skills'). How well does Alexa work? Pretty well, except that it's speech recognition could use some improvements, but cannot do anything more than the skills people write for it. Like anything that anyone can write programs for, most of these 'skills' are real crap.

if its used to make totalitarianism easier it is being used in an evil fashion.

A digital computer can usually be regarded as consisting of three parts: (i) Store. (ii) Executive unit. (iii) Control.
* Where would the network card fit into all that, i.e. (i), (ii) or (iii)?
* Where would the WiFi fit into all that?
* Where would the video card fit into all that?
* Where would the power supply fit into all that?
* Where would a computer case fit into all that?
* Where would the M.2 heat sink fit into all that?

Thanks in advance.

Totally correct, within your context.

I think you are both talking past each other to a certain extent. Alexa swaps control for convenience with the user. Alexa comes into control while the user comes into convenience. The user, however, never sees who is controlling Alexa, nor who is listening to everything Alexa hears, nor who is receiving and processing all the data Alexa sends out onto the internet. The user can see the settings he has chosen, but cannot see into Alexa to verify that his settings are what are actually in effect. Alexa can also be hacked, allowing the hacker to then control everything controlled by Alexa.

A totalitarian regime could use Alexa to advance a totalitarian agenda. A totalitarian regime could also simply use Alexa to bring convenience into their homes. As Into the Night mentioned, Alexa is just a voice recognition interface tied to a controller application ... with an internet connection.

Or:
* the fans
* the USB connectors
* the audio connectors
* the LEDS on the front of the case?
* the reset button
* the power button
* the Bluetooth network (if used)
* the web
* email
* SSL
* a programming language
* a database language
* a protocol
* the cloud
* ChatGPT
* the master oscillator
* the PCI buss
* a charger cable
* an error message

Just thought I'd add to the pile of stuff that is not the 'three parts of a computer', yet they are all parts of a computer system.

Obviously, the Wannabe Creep just has no idea what he's talking about (again). He found something on Google or Wikipedia and tries to 'talk smart' while looking dumb.

That's not what ChatGPT does. It is reliant upon human intervention.

While what you say is theoretically possible, it would mean Amazon itself would have be involved in such a break-in.
That would be financial suicide. People would leave AWS and no longer use Alexa. Such a tyrannical government taking over Amazon in that way would be pretty damn obvious.

You'd like to think so wouldn't you?
