That means , while in the short term you gain more jobs at home, by building those goods with more expensive labor, but you also LOSE the export for your goods. those jobs and those markets are lost to the USA.

The head of GE said he wished he could put every plant on a barge and move it to wherever he could get the best deal. That is how much they care about American workers. When bankers crashed the world economy in 2007/8 they were paid in full. They kept their jobs. They do not suffer evaluations as we do. They are on the inside.

Why would the Taiwanese want a plant immune from Chinese invasion. Right now, if China invades Taiwan, it cuts off chips from the whole world, which makes the whole world involved. If there are plants immune from Chinese invasion, then the rest of the world would not care if Taiwan was invaded.

Duplication of effort means duplication of expense. Almost all the cost of these chips is the startup cost, the rest is basically just a little sand. That means if we have 100 duplicate chip centers, the chips cost 100 times as much.

I am not completely against duplicate effort, but we should not pretend it does not come without major costs. And it will take time. We will need to spend billions of dollars and years of education, before we can even really start.
