I think you correct on this. The Democrats and Republican elites both appeal to their 'bases' or baser members. For the elites it's about enriching themselves and maintaining power.
It is past time to get some folks that recognize the limits of what the government can or should do about what the people eat, drink, smoke, ingest, or have relations with. It also is past time to believe that somehow government can protect you from your actions of spending, how you fail to raise your kids or if you are dumb enough to blow dry your hair while showering.
