When this board started the discourse was reasonably measured. I do not remember an atmosphere of toxicity back then. It is difficult to believe Jackson said anything substantially worse than the degenerate racism and misogyny that is tolerated here on a daily basis.

Back in the days when we programmed computers using half inch tape on 10-inch reels, we had the Conway's Game of Life. The programmer (God) would set the parameters and then watch the game evolve those parameters into a stable form or a continually changing form. By changing the initial settings, all sorts of things would evolve. Some of these evolution results had predictable outcomes.

This, and other political forums, evolve over time just like the Life program. Also like the Life program, their evolution can be predictable based upon the parameters set. Mainly by the rules and moderation of those rules.

USMB is biased right, but the mods also lean right creating a bit of a RW echo chamber. PoliticalHotwire is biased left with left-leaning mods and similar results. I like JPP because it's more like the Wild West: "Don't murder anyone, good luck".

Because of those parameters, certain behaviors will evolve. How do you compare JPP to other forums?

I'd love to find a better spot that allows the banter and smack talk but doesn't allow all the racism, sexism, trolling, and shitposting. I'm just about over it here lately and with our politics as a whole. If more people used Facebook I'd just chat there maybe.

Freedom of speech is like a faucet. You can restrict it, shut it off or leave it wide open but you can't screen it without those doing the screening evolving into bias because the screens are a judgment call.

Some forums have profanity filters, but that's a Nanny State action. I was on a religious forum, technically still am, but it was like discussing pregnancy in church. People could only go so far until they started running into bias.

We all have choices. In political forums there is a direct correlation between the number of choices and Freedom of Speech. Less choices means less freedom of speech. A profanity filter for "dang", "gosh" and "Darn it!" limits freedom of speech.

We also have the choice of going to a more biased forum.

I don't consider trolling and shitposting part of the freedom of speech of a forum. It's actually a hindrance to speech to have trolls spamming your forum. When it was wall to wall shitpost discussions from Terri4Trump I wasn't the only one wanting to pack up and move out. Troll spammers seek to make forums a mess and not readable. Most places would can that shit in no time.

What about a person burning an American flag? Isn't that equivalent to "shitposting"?

Where do we draw the line? Arbitrarily? If so, then that limitation will evolve into further limitations. It's human nature.
