Was it Kissinger that said power is the ultimate aphrodisiac? The whole argument for Biden in 2020 was 1) we need to get rid of Trump 2) Biden would be a one term President who has experience and will 'return things to normal'. That clearly appealed to a number of people.
Biden trying to run for two terms is a totally different story. And just as the Republican Party couldn't get rid of Trump the Democrats (many who knew deep down this was coming) didn't stand up to Biden and work for a replacement (instead of just hoping he would go against human nature and step down). So here we are.

This is from yesterday's SF Chronicle. It was written in response to Newsom's State of the State speech where he focused far more on national issues than what's happening in California. But it's a very appropriate heading in light of last night's debate.

Clinton was a bad campaigner and Biden is way past his prime, even in 2020, their primary came down to Bernie and Joe. They seem to be stuck on the “next man up” syndrome, and a tendency to not extend out beyond beltway politics
Both parties need a flush, new faces, and not just at the top levels
