3 teens charged in connection with Granite City murder

The family of a 54-year-old Army veteran who was shot to death in Granite City is relieved the four teenagers allegedly responsible for his death are behind bars and possibly facing life in prison.

"I figured he died in vain," said Charles A. Weiss' sister Kim Woolard, 52, of Granite City, and the police wouldn't be able to find those responsible. Woolard said she's glad that wasn't the case and thanked the investigators with the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis.

Three Madison teenagers were charged Tuesday in connection with first-degree murder, according to Granite City Police.

The following teens each were charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the homicide of Weiss: Markeith Reynolds Jr., 15, of the 900 block of Iowa Street; Shawn L. Russel, 15, of the 1700 block of Second Street; and Brian L. Taylor, 16, of the 1100 block of McCambridge.

All three teenagers, who are friends, were charged as adults and remain in the custody of the Madison County Juvenile Detention Home, said Maj. Jeff Connor with the Granite City Police Department. A fourth suspect remains in custody in the Madison County Juvenile Detention Home, but his case remains in juvenile court since he is younger than 15. Connor said there will be a certification hearing to determine if the fourth suspect's case will be moved to adult court.

Weiss was found shot at 9:25 p.m. Thursday in an alley near the 1200 block of Meridian Avenue in Granite City. Before he succumbed to his injuries, Weiss told police that "they tried to rob me." Police wouldn't disclose what if anything was taken from Weiss.

"This case stemmed from an attempted armed robbery that led to the shooting death of Mr. Charles Weiss," Connor said. "This was a random crime, which actually made this a difficult crime to solve. It was a crime of opportunity for these thugs. They saw this man; they waited in the alley for him, ambushed him and shot him."

Granite City Police Chief Rich Miller said Weiss was "gunned down in cold blood. (He) was doing nothing wrong other than walking to a local business."

Weiss died from a single 9mm gunshot wound to the chest.

They were probably on their way to early vote for OWEbama

It wasn't enough to have one troll posting every gun crime to overturn the 2nd Amendment.

No, we needed another troll posting violent crimes committed by minorities to overturn an election.

Fashion publicist who brutally stabbed his young girlfriend to death with steak knives sentenced to 25 years to life in prison
Raul Barrera's taped confession of killing Sarah Coit, 23, details 'skirmish' that 'got out of control'
Miss Coit was found still breathing in a pool of blood after being stabbed some 30 times
Barerra was given maximum sentence in gruesome crime

The fashion publicist who confessed to the brutal butchering of his girlfriend on New York’s Lower East Side was today sentenced to 25 years to life in prison, the heaviest sentence available for the crime.
images

The 33-year-old Raul Barrera had confessed to first beating then stabbing his beautiful girlfriend of three years, Sarah Coit, in her Clinton Street apartment after she had told him she was done with their relationship.

He left her disemboweled and nearly headless, with a steak knife still embedded in her skull, as frantic neighbors tried to find where her screams were coming from.

Prosecutor Matthew Bogdanos said Barrera was looking for a ‘show worthy of popcorn’ according to the New York Post.

When beating was no longer enough, he began stabbing the young woman with a total of five knives, Mr Bogdanos said. ‘Two were butcher knives,’ he said, ‘the kind you use on the toughest joins in the toughest animals.’

He noted that the beautiful blonde was only 23.

Ms Coit was still alive when Barrera finished. Her intestines were spilling out of her body, there was a steak knife jetting out of her skull, and here head was nearly severed.

‘I don’t know. I lost it,’ Barrera is heard mumbling to a police officer and a prosecutor just five hours after the brutal slaying of the young Lacoste sales manager.

Barrera said the pair had begun arguing before the ‘tussle’ began and ‘things got out of control’.

He said: ‘Then we started arguing a little bit. Got into a tussle and there was this silver cart thing next to the edge of the kitchen counter and we must have knocked it down and we must have knocked it down and all the cutlery, the knives were in the…they just all fell to the ground and then we fell to the ground.

‘And I was on top of her. Then my hand just got a cut and it was bleeding a lot profusely and I just…things got out of control.’

After stabbing Miss Coit repeatedly, he then admitted to dragging her, as she lay dying, from her living room into her bedroom before flinging his coat on her, according to the New York Post.

Rather than calling the emergency services, he phoned his parents, sister and his son to ‘apologize,’ changed out of his blood-soaked clothes and left the New York apartment to hail a cab.

so your silence on obama signing NDAA, increasing TSA checkpoints, and drone bombings means you accept and approve?

So you do approve of this racist shit... because instead of denouncing it like a fucking human being, you tried to put the conservative flip back on me. Gee, had I known we were discussing NDAA, TSA and Drone bombings ON THIS FUCKING THREAD, maybe I wouldn't have been so silent on the subject.

But since the subject is pretty evident, this douchbag tossing up every crime involving a black person and accrediting it to Obama, I would expect you to say something. Take your time... you have 4 more years to work up a new game plan. You can afford to support racist like this for another year or so at the most.

Uhhhh no, it doesn't mean that it all. It means the same thing as when you ignore a child trying to argue with you. Any form of acknowledgement implies that the position you are arguing against is somehow debatable or intellectually valid. It's not. Webbway is not someone to acknowledge for the same reason it is a bad idea to acknowledge a 5 year intellectually; all you're going to do is encourage them.

My reaction encourages him. He feeds off of that. The reaction from what he considers his peers "might" make him consider what he's doing is asinine.

It's their silence that concerns me.

But I'll make sure to ignore him next time around.

Video Shows MTA Bus Driver Fighting With A Teen Passenger

Caught on camera–dramatic and disturbing new video shows an MTA bus driver fighting with a passenger. Now the agency is taking action.

Mike Hellgren
spoke with the woman who shot the video. She says this was alarming to her as a regular rider. It happened at Baltimore and Paca streets Monday around 2 p.m. The driver is suspended without pay.

The video shows an MTA bus driver — who’s now been suspended — entangled in a fight with a high school student who was riding on her bus. That fight continues for roughly 30 more seconds as other passengers get out of the way. They struggled, moving from one end of the bus to the other, before things calmed down.

The bus driver went to the front while those who watched it unfold asked her how it happened. The woman who shot the fight says it started when the driver thought the teenage passenger was playing her music too loudly and stopped the bus to confront her. She asked us to conceal her identity.

“The only thing she did physically was get up to get off the bus. The bus driver grabbed her and they started to fight,” she said.

She says she never met the teenager before, that the teen seemed shaken and had scratches and a bite mark on her arm after what happened. “When she parked the bus, everything just went from zero to 60–that fast–to the argument,” she said.

The MTA says the driver has worked with the agency since 2003 and they are reviewing the video, as well as video from multiple cameras on board. “We have a no engage policy. Under no circumstances should our operators be fighting customers,” said Terry Owens, MTA spokesperson. “At the MTA, our highest priority is the safety of our passengers and our employees and we expect our employees to remember that at all times.”

A judge in Atlanta on Friday set bond at $100,000 for ex-WNBA star and Olympic gold medalist Chamique Holdsclaw, who was in jail on assault and weapons charges.

She is accused of firing a shot into a car belonging to 29-year-old Jennifer Lacy, who plays for the Tulsa Shock. Police say the 35-year-old Holdsclaw also used a bat to smash the car's windows. Holdsclaw was in custody at the Fulton County Jail.

No one was injured in the assault. Lacy told police that Holdsclaw was an ex-girlfriend and they were Atlanta Dream teammates in 2009. Holdsclaw was ordered to wear a monitoring device and have no contact with Lacy.

She was ordered back to a Fulton County court Nov. 30 to face charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. A message to her attorney was not immediately returned.

Women gets 5 years for punching elderly Walmart greeter

The woman who punched a 70-year-old Walmart greeter in the face after she asked to see a receipt for merchandise she was carrying out of the store has been sentenced to five years in prison.

images

Jacquetta Simmons, 27, was sentenced Wednesday for the attack that knocked Grace Suozzi to the ground, and fracturing the side of the elderly woman's face.

In court Simmons said she was sorry for the incident that injured Grace Suozzi on Christmas Eve in 2011, but the judge and prosecutor Larry Friedman say Simmons hardly seems sorry.

'She absolutely did not accept any responsibility for what she did,' Mr Friedman said.

The sentence stems from an incident in which Ms Suozzi had asked Simmons to show her a receipt for some electronics purchases she had made at the back of the store, a witness told ABC 13, when the young woman attacked.

Ms Simmons responded with a punch to Ms Suozzi's face, knocking her to the ground. Simmons and her male companion then ran out of the store in Batavia, New York after the confrontation but were detained by employees and customers until police arrived, assisted by a large crowd that had surrounded Ms Simmons' car so she couldn't drive away.

The incident was captured on security cameras inside the store, and the video was part of the evidence used to convict Ms Simmons.

In court, Suozzi broke down as she told the court how her life has changed since that attack: 'What she has taken away is irreplaceable, she has taken away my independence...she has taken away my joy and replaced it with trauma." Suozzi says she is bruised, afraid, depressed and cannot leave the house. She relied on that Walmart job to pay her bills and is now struggling.

Suozzi said there were times when she thought she would die following the assault. She says she suffers to this day, both physically and emotionally.

The judge called the assault 'brutal and senseless.'

Vallejo teen in adult court for kidnapping, rape charges

The 14-year-old boy charged as an adult in the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of a 65-year-old woman in Vallejo appeared in court Monday.

Wearing a blue juvenile hall jumpsuit, Kaviar King was ushered into adult court with his hands shackled at his waist. Charged with 10 felony counts, he looked straight ahead as his public defender asked for his arraignment to be postponed a week to allow the defense more time to prepare before possibly entering a plea.

King faces charges including attempted murder, torture, kidnapping, carjacking and a range of sex offenses.

His bail was set at $4.5 million, a figure that reflects six felonies that carry potential life sentences. He is being held at Solano County Juvenile Hall, where he will remain pending the outcome of his case unless he is bailed out.

King was arrested Thursday night for allegedly kidnapping the victim at gunpoint in the parking lot of the Gateway Plaza shopping center in Vallejo. He allegedly forced the victim to drive to a location within several miles where he sexually assaulted her.

Passersby discovered the victim duct taped in a ditch near Hiddenbrooke Parkway and Interstate 80. They called police and gave information that helped investigators develop leads in the case, police said.

King was arrested after returning to the parking lot where the initial abduction took place. Vallejo detectives were there investigating when they spotted King and arrested him, according to police. He was found in possession of the victim's property, a replica handgun and her minivan.

During the abduction, which lasted more than an hour, police said a family member of the victim received a phone call from someone demanding money in exchange for the victim's safe return. The family member reported the ransom demand to police. Police said the ransom was not paid.

Deputy District Attorney Karen Jensen said prosecutors decided to charge King as an adult because of the "serious nature of the crime."

In California, 14 is the minimum age for a minor to be charged as an adult. King turned 14 on Sept. 3, according to information released during Monday's hearing.

Walmart shooting victim testifies, points out attacker

The 19-year-old woman who just cashed her paycheck at a Walmart in Whitehall Township sensed something uncomfortable about the young man outside who asked her for a cigarette.

Barbara Hausknecht told the man she had no cigarette and continued walking away with her friend, she testified in Lehigh County Court Friday. That's when the man demanded her clutch that contained about $500, she said. Hausknecht refused, so the man grabbed her by the arm, pulled out a gun and fired it into her back, narrowly missing her spine, she testified. That man and an accomplice who was waiting nearby got on top of the fallen Hausknecht, ripped the clutch out of her hands and fled, she testified.

While she was down, the young woman continued trying to fight off the men, she said. "He hit me in the mouth with the gun and cracked a few of my teeth," Hausknecht testified.

In court Friday, Hausknecht sobbed as she pointed out Darnell Ray Lewis Jr. as the man who shot her on the afternoon of Oct. 18, 2011, leaving her hospitalized for three weeks with possible permanent internal injuries. The woman who drove Lewis from the scene also testified and also named Lewis as the shooter.

District Judge David M. Howells Jr. ruled enough evidence was presented to send robbery and related charges to Lehigh County Court. Lewis, 20, North Carolina, is also charged with aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit robbery, theft and receiving stolen property.

During the hearing, Howells reprimanded Lewis for glaring at the victim and his court staff. The victim and another witness were allowed to testify from the prosecutor's table instead of the witness stand.

Whitehall police said two others were involved in the armed robbery and shooting: Tymesha L. McKenzie, 20, of Easton, and Ferontay Troutman, 22, of North Carolina. McKenzie, who testified Friday, is free as she awaits trial. Troutman died last year in New Jersey before he could be charged.

Hausknecht testified she had just cashed her $500 paycheck at the Walmart on MacArthur Road around 12:30 p.m. and was planning on using the money to rent an apartment. She was walking with her unidentified friend and pushing a cart containing dog food and presents for her niece when she was approached by two men, she testified.

McKenzie testified she drove to the Walmart with Lewis, Troutman and her 2-year-old son. She said Lewis and Troutman went inside the store to buy some items, but did not come out with anything.

She testified the men came back to her car and Lewis appeared upset and then pulled a revolver out and placed it on his lap. As they were about to drive away, Lewis told McKenzie to stop the car, she testified.

Lewis and Troutman got out of the car and approached a woman and man. She said she saw Lewis talking to the man and woman and then saw the woman fall to the ground. When Lewis and Troutman got back to her car, McKenzie asked Lewis if he shot the woman.

She said Lewis answered, "Yes, because she wouldn't give it up."

McKenzie testified she drove the men away and they split the cash in the wallet.

[h=1]Day care owner gets 80 years for murdering 4 children[/h]
A Texas woman was sentenced to 80 years Tuesday for her felony murder conviction in the death of one of four children killed in a fire at her home day care in Houston.

Jessica Tata, 24, was convicted last week in connection with the death of 16-month-old Elias Castillo. Authorities say Elias was one of seven children whom Tata left unsupervised at her home while she went to a nearby Target store. Prosecutors say she left a pan of oil cooking atop a stovetop burner and that this ignited the February 2011 blaze. Three other children were seriously injured.

AP76565590266_244x183.jpg

Along with the prison sentence, Tata was ordered to pay a $10,000 fine.

She still faces three more counts of felony murder in relation to the other children who died, and three counts of abandoning a child and two counts of reckless injury to a child in relation to three who were hurt.

During the punishment phase of the trial, prosecutors argued Tata was an irresponsible day care owner who left the children she was caring for alone on multiple occasions and who ran an unclean facility. Tata's family and friends told jurors she was a good person who loved kids. They asked the jury for mercy.

Tata's attorneys argued she never intended to hurt the children, who ranged in age from 16 months to 3 years old, and that she tried to save them. But prosecutors did not need to show she intended to harm the children, only that the deaths occurred because she put them in danger by leaving them alone.

Under Texas law, a person can be convicted of felony murder if he or she committed an underlying felony and that action led to the death. Tata fled to Nigeria in the wake of the fire but was captured after about a month, returned to the U.S. in March 2011 and has remained jailed since. She was born in the U.S. but has Nigerian citizenship.
