Man gets 50 years to life for murder of Bronx school crossing guard — 'You shot and killed a lady who treated you like her own child'

She mothered the whole community — including the man who killed her.

Relatives of a big-hearted NYPD school crossing guard and Bronx mother ripped into her murderer Tuesday as he got the max for killing her and nearly slaying her daughter in a jealous rage.

"You shot and killed a lady who treated you like her own child," seethed Laura Dunn, one of victim Elzina Brown's daughters, on Tuesday in Bronx Supreme Court before a judge sentenced Raymond Mayrant to 50 years to life.

Raymond Mayrant, 28, was found guilty of blasting Brown in the chest after first shooting her daughter, Diamond Dunn, at the Monroe Houses. The 59-year-old murder victim was a crossing guard at P.S 100 in Soundview.

The killer had grown jealous after living apart from Dunn and their 4-year-old daughter, Madison, prosecutors said. Diamond was shot three times in the face, but survived the Jan. 3, 2013 attack. Her mother had cried out to help her as she lay bleeding — revealing her location to the killer, Dunn recalled. "He ran to her bedroom after she said, 'What's going on in there?' Those were the last words she ever said to me," Dunn said.
"I saw him run to her room, and I heard the one gunshot."

Judge Alvin Yearwood slammed Mayrant as unforgivable before sentencing him to 25 years for Brown's murder, followed by 25 more on an attempted murder charge for trying to kill Dunn. "I tried to find something redeeming about you," said the jurist. "I could not find a single thing redeeming about you."

[h=1]Girl, 17, Is Fatally Shot in Marina Del Rey; Search for Black Gunman Underway[/h]

A 17-year-old from Houston was fatally shot in the parking lot of a shopping center near Marina del Rey on Wednesday evening, and police were searching for the gunman.

Kristine Carman is shown in a photo provided by her relative in Houston.

Officers received a call around 8 p.m. Wednesday regarding a shooting in a supermarket parking lot at Glencoe Avenue and Mindanao Way, a Los Angeles Police Department news release stated. The location is in the Villa Marina Marketplace shopping center in Del Rey, at the edge of Marina del Rey.

Police found a girl, later identified by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office as 17-year-old Kristine Carman, shot inside a vehicle.

Her sister wrote on Facebook that the girl was killed in front of her in a "robbery gone wrong." She called the victim "beautiful smart and undeserving."

She was pronounced dead at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel.

"There simply are no words to describe the loss of a child. Her family is devastated," said her stepmother in a brief email to KTLA.

The gunman was described as a black man wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and blue beanie. Police believe he fled the location in a dark-colored SUV, possibly heading toward the 90 Freeway.

Details about what led up to the shooting were not immediately available.

"Kristine was exceptionally smart and wonderfully creative - she was a skilled photographer who loved taking photos. She was very close with her siblings, each of whom loved her immensely," her father said in a statement provided to KPRC. "Her family is devastated by this senseless tragedy, and appreciates everyone's prayers as we privately mourn this tremendous loss."
Carman was the second eldest in a family of six, according to a GoFundMe page created by her sister.

2 would-be robbers, 15 and 17, shot to death at liquor store

CYVOhnyUEAAdI08.jpg

Two would-be robbers who were fatally shot at a liquor store in the Gresham neighborhood Saturday night have been identified as a 15-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy, authorities said.

Keshawn Marzette, 15, of the 8300 block of South Throop Street, and William Larson, 17, of the same address, were pronounced dead on the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Both autopsies are scheduled for Sunday.

The two were shot to death by a store employee about 8:30 p.m. when they tried to rob Z&S Food & Liquor in the 1300 block of West 87th Street, sources said.

Citing preliminary information, authorities said two people walked into the store, and one of them hopped over the counter.
That person hit the clerk standing behind the counter, while the other remained in front of the counter, authorities said.

Meanwhile, a relative of the store owner heard a commotion upstairs and saw the robbery suspects from a stairwell, authorities said.
He pulled out a gun and opened fire on the two, killing them, authorities said. At least one of them was armed with a gun.

Someone at the liquor store in the immediate aftermath of the shooting had taken a photo of the two bodies: one whose face is visible, eyes and mouth open; another in blood-spattered jeans next to a thick pool of blood. A gun lies on a mat next to racks of pork rinds and bottled water.

Cincinnati man shoots 14-year-old son dead after teen unexpectedly returns after leaving for school

Georta-Mack-WLWT-800x430.png

A Cincinnati man shot and killed his son Tuesday after mistaking the boy for an intruder. Police said the man had dropped off his son, Georta Mack, at a school bus stop, but the 14-year-old returned home and hid in the basement of their home in the East Price Hill neighborhood, reported the Cincinnati Enquirer.

His father heard a noise and grabbed his handgun before heading downstairs to the basement to investigate. He opened a door and found his son standing in the doorway, police said.
The startled father fired one shot, investigators said, striking his teenage son in the neck. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than two hours later.

The shooting remains under investigation.

[h=1]Boy, 16, on probation in gun case when he killed 2 teens[/h]
A 10th-grader on probation in a gun case is accused of opening fire from a stolen SUV and shooting three teens on a South Side corner earlier this month, killing a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl.

Anthony Murphy, 16, was charged as an adult with murder and attempted murder after he was identified by the surviving teen and "made admissions regarding his involvement in the shooting," Cook County prosecutors said Wednesday.

Murphy, his wrists and ankles cuffed, appeared briefly in bond court, where Judge James Brown ordered him held without bail. “There’s no question in my mind this defendant is a danger to the community and himself," the judge said.

Prosecutors said Murphy was riding in the back seat of a green Ford Explorer around 3:35 p.m. Jan. 5 when he began shouting gang slogans at the three teens walking home from school in the 7500 block of South Dorchester Avenue. Murphy then shot at the teens as they ran down the street, prosecutors said. Donta Parker, 16, was shot in the head, and Sakinah Reed, 17, was shot in the back and leg, authorities said. Both were pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn an hour after the shooting, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The third teen, another 16-year-old boy, was shot in the finger and ankle and was taken in good condition to St. Bernard Hospital and Healthcare Center.

A video taken at a nearby gas station a few minutes before the shooting showed Murphy in the back seat of the Explorer, prosecutors said. The video showed the Explorer turning onto Dorchester toward the three teens, prosecutors said.

The next day, the Explorer was recovered by police, and a .380-caliber shell casing was recovered inside the SUV, prosecutors said. The casing matched six shells found at the scene of the shooting, prosecutors said. Murphy was picked up after he was identified by the surviving teen as well as a witness at the gas station, prosecutors said.

The attorney for Murphy said the boy is in the 10th grade at Hirsch Metropolitan High School and lives with his mother. Murphy is on probation for a unlawful use of a weapon case from last year, according to Assistant State's Attorney Brian Whang. In 2013, he was convicted of aggravated battery and possession of a stolen motor vehicle and got two years of probation.

Parker, Reed and the third teen were among at least 10 people shot across Chicago during a nearly 14-hour stretch starting about 6:45 a.m. Jan. 5. So far this year, more than 130 people have been shot in Chicago.

LAUREL, Del. — A Laurel man is being charged with murder after police say he killed his mother by nearly decapitating her.

Delaware State Police Sgt. Richard Bratz says 61-year-old Yolande Georges was found dead inside her home by family members on Jan. 7. Bratz says Georges sustained a neck wound so deep it amounted to near decapitation. Officers found a machete with blood on it elsewhere in the house.

Hours earlier, an officer stopped Appolon for walking in the middle of the road. The officer says Appolon began stabbing himself in the neck with a pen, and that he had blood on his clothes and face. The office took Appolon into custody.

Court documents say Appolon later admitted to the crime. It’s not indicated in court records whether an attorney is yet representing Appolon.

Young man gunned down in Jack's robbery had just started new job, was 'eager for future'

Family, friends and Jack's restaurants are raising money to cover the funeral costs for a 21-year-old Sumiton man who was killed at the Pleasant Grove restaurant Wednesday.

ashton-blake-roberts-7d4afb45fc48d698.jpg

Kayla Mahaffey set up a GoFundMe account in memory of Ashton Blake Roberts – her cousin, friend and former classmate.

"He had just gotten a new job and was so eager for his future," Mahaffey said. "This tragedy couldn't have happened to a better young man," she said. "I hope people learn from Ashton's story to never take your loved ones for granted. He was a blessing to our family and will truly be missed. His family would really appreciate any donations during this time, big or small."

Jack's released a statement saying the company also plans to help cover Roberts' family with funeral expenses.

"The entire Jack's family extends its heartfelt sympathies to the friends and family of the victims in last night's tragic shooting in Pleasant Grove," the statement reads. "We commend the law enforcement for their prompt and effective action in this matter. Please join us in keeping the victim's family and friends as well as the Jack's employees present last night in your thoughts and prayers."

Ashton loved cars and had worked on them with his dad since he was in elementary school, Mahaffey said. She could call him when her car was having trouble, and, even if he wasn't sure what was wrong with it, he would make sure it was fixed.

"He was a hard-worker who loved to help others," she said. "I know if anyone else was in this situation Ashton would be there to help and make sure things were taken care of."

Roderick Derrell King, 19, was taken into custody early Thursday on warrants for capital murder and first-degree robbery.

King, who is still awaiting trial for a 2014 case where police say shots were fired during a robbery at Burger King in Hueytown, is now being held without bond.

Roberts was standing in line at Jack's on Wednesday night when police say King, brandishing a rifle, stormed the Park Road restaurant and ordered everyone inside to the floor. Roberts, it appears, froze and hesitated, and was shot in the face. King then turned the gun toward a teenage cashier and demanded money. He fled with an undetermined amount of cash. The entire robbery and killing took just 11 seconds.

Jasper Ford, where Roberts worked, released this statement via Facebook: "Our hearts go out to the family of Ashton Roberts, of Sumiton. He was a young technician with a great future ahead of him. We are inexpressibly sorry to have lost him so early. We will update our page with funeral home information when available."

Jack's also is providing counseling for the crew and individual counseling for the five team members who were working when the shooting happened. In the statement, the company also thanked FBC Church for being on-site Wednesday to "provide spiritual guidance to the employee at Jack's along with the family of the victim."

Teen Busted For Blowing Smoke In Teacher's Face

Student, 18, faces harassment rap for shocking in-class confrontation

JANUARY 19--The Arkansas student who lit a cigar in class and then repeatedly blew smoke in his teacher’s face was arrested yesterday on a harassment charge, police report. Christopher Dunn, 18, was busted Monday morning on the misdemeanor charge and booked into the Pulaski County jail. He was later released after posting $2500 bond.

Dunn was collared in connection with a December 14 incident at North Little Rock High School. As seen above, part of the confrontation between Dunn and teacher Robert Holley was recorded by another student.

As detailed in a North Little Rock Police Department report, Holley told cops that the incident with Dunn began after the pupil “showed up to class to take his final exam.”

Holley recalled telling Dunn that he would have to sit in the hallway to take the test. When the student refused, “Holley said he told Dunn that if he didn’t do as he was asked that he was going to write him up and call for a campus supervisor to remove him.”

As Holley reached for an intercom button, Dunn said, "Hit that button, I dare you.” When Holley began “writing Dunn up,” police noted, “his class started going wild so he turned around to see what the commotion was about.” Dunn, Holley said, had lit a cigar and was “taking a drag off of it.” The teenager then walked up to Holley and blew cigar smoke in the educator's face. While the video shows Dunn doing this once, Holley told police the student blew smoke in his face three times. The teacher also told cops that he had Dunn removed from his classroom on three prior occasions this school year.

Dunn’s provocation appeared to delight fellow students, who can be heard in the background laughing, clapping, and whooping. Dunn was eventually escorted from the classroom by a campus supervisor. While departing, the student turned back to Holley and said, “I’ll be back.”

School officials have declined to disclose what disciplinary measures Dunn has faced.

Teachers can no longer throw the trash out of the classroom like they once could, now they have to coddle and make excuses for this type of behavior.
