The most recent homicide happened Sunday evening in a Hermosa neighborhood alley on the Northwest Side.

A New Orleans woman was arrested Wednesday morning after she said a gun she kept under her pillow went off, shooting and killing her baby grandson, police said.

Deonca Kennedy, 42, was charged with negligent homicide, second-degree cruelty to a juvenile and child desertion, authorities said.

Police said the shooting happened about 2 a.m., when Kennedy and her 3-year-old grandson were the only people in the home. The boy’s mother, who also lives in New Orleans, was at work and left her son there for the night, Officer Tyler Gamble told the Daily News.

Kennedy was sleeping in a bed with her grandson when her tucked-away gun went off, fatally striking the boy in the chest, police said. He later died in a hospital. Police have not determined whether the shooting was accidental, Gamble said. Since her arrest, Kennedy has refused to help the investigation.

“She hasn’t given a statement and just refused to cooperate,” he said. “We haven’t definitively ruled anything” about how the shooting happened, he added.

Records show Kennedy in 2005 faced charges for public intimidation and solicitation for murder, which were both dropped.

A Chester County man fatally stabbed his 81-year-old grandmother after trying to sexually assault her and his mother, police said Wednesday.


Kevin Havelow, 23, of Irwin Road in Lower Oxford, was charged with murder and attempted rape after the attack Tuesday, the Chester County District Attorney's Office said.


Havelow, who had been hospitalized last month after he allegedly expressed a desire to harm himself, had been smoking marijuana with a friend Tuesday, police said. When the pair returned to Havelow's house, Havelow's mother said the friend could not spend the night, according to an affidavit filed in the case. Havelow then assaulted her and tried to rape her, police said.


His sister called 911, and his mother fled to another room. Havelow then went downstairs, police said, and tried to rape his grandmother, the affidavit says. He allegedly assaulted his mother a second time before she escaped and hid with his sister.

Then Havelow stabbed his grandmother 20 times with kitchen knives, killing her, the affidavit says.


Pennsylvania State Police responding to a 911 call found Havelow naked in the kitchen, police said. The grandmother was pronounced dead at the scene. "We are grateful that the quick response stopped the defendant's actions before anyone else was injured or killed," said Lt. Jeremy Richard of the state police.


According to police, Havelow was unemployed but previously worked at Wal-Mart and Herr Foods Inc. He had enlisted in the Army National Guard but had not completed service. He graduated from Oxford High School, where he was on the wrestling team, police said.

[h=2]Police in Columbus are looking for two men who put a gun to the head of an eight-year-old in order to steal a hoverboard.[/h] Though the incident happened last November, police in Ohio’s capital city are now asking the public for help identifying the suspects. Police have released several photos of persons of interest in hopes that someone in the public can give authorities information leading to an arrest.


The incident occurred on November 26 outside Fort Rapids Water Park around 10 PM. Surveillance video shows the men putting the gun to the child’s head and demanding the toy. The pair then rush to a PT Cruiser and drive off.


Investigators say that a female was with the two male suspects but they aren’t sure if the woman was aware of or part of the robbery.

A man accused of shooting dead his ex-girlfriend, her new boyfriend and his own one-year-old son has married a key witness - who may now be exempt from testifying against him.

Joseph Nelson, 23, is charged with murdering Bianca Fletcher, 17, her boyfriend Shannon Rollins, 18, and Nelson's own baby boy on September 8 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Shellana Victoria Davis, 20, is believed to have been the only witness to the triple shooting, but has now married Nelson, meaning she may not have to give evidence under state law protecting spouses from testifying against each other.

Prosecutors claim the marriage constitutes 'intentional efforts' to hinder the case, court documents revealed.

Davis told police she saw Nelson shoot Miss Fletcher during an argument, prosecutors in Jackson County say.
He is then alleged to have shot Mr Rollins so he would not be a witness, before turning the gun on his own son so his cries did not attract attention, the Kansas City Star reported.

Nelson married Davis on December 7 while he was jailed on a $1million bond.

East Chicago City Councilman Robert Battle took the oath of office from behind bars at the Porter County Jail last week.


Battle was re-elected to his council seat in November, one month after murder and drug charges were filed by the federal government.


An unnamed official was brought in to do the swearing-in on Friday for Battle, who is being held in federal custody at the Porter County facility, according to Sheriff David Reynolds. "There is no reason for me to deny it legally," Reynolds said, adding he spoke to the U.S. marshal, who agreed. Battle could have chosen to be sworn in via video conferencing but opted for an in-person oath, Reynolds said.


Indiana law permits Battle to hold his seat – and collect the $42,365 salary that it pays – until he resigns, admits his guilt on any of the charges or is found guilty in court. Battle, a Democrat, ran unopposed in November and received 308 votes.


Michelle Fajman, director of Lake County's election board, confirmed Saturday that her office received Battle's paperwork Friday. Newly elected officials whose terms start Jan. 1 have until Jan. 30 to be sworn into office.


Battle is accused of shooting to death on Oct. 12 Reimundo Camarillo Jr., in the 4200 block of Euclid Avenue in East Chicago, according to court records. He also faces a federal drug charge stemming from a traffic stop in Porter County where police found 73.22 grams of marijuana and $100,700 in cash.





Battle has pleaded not guilty. His trial is scheduled for August.

A Chicago Public Schools high school counselor has been charged with sexually abusing a Manley High School student in a classroom.

Deshone Jackson, 33, appeared in Cook County bond court Saturday and was ordered held in lieu of $100,000 bail on charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and public indecency.

Jackson, of the 5900 block of South Wabash Avenue, was a contracted counselor at the high school from Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, a federal grant program designed to help low-income students prepare for college, according to prosecutors and the program's website.

Jackson met the 17-year-old boy through Manley's GEAR UP chapter and began texting with him in early fall, prosecutors said. In October, Jackson texted the victim asking for a photo, and the boy responded by sending Jackson a nude photo of himself.

Around Oct. 28, while working at Manley, Jackson sent a message asking the victim to meet him in an unused, third-floor classroom. Upon arriving, the victim found Jackson sitting in a desk with his pants and underwear down around his ankles, and his genitals exposed. Jackson asked the victim to touch him, and the victim complied, prosecutors said.

During the incident, the victim pretended to be texting, but instead took two to three photos of Jackson, documenting the incident. The victim then left the classroom, prosecutors said.

The victim immediately told several friends what had happened and showed them the pictures, prosecutors said. The students positively identified Jackson in the photos, which were later inadvertently deleted when the victim attempted to remove a photo album from his phone.

Around Jan. 4, the victim told a school employee about the incident, who then notified the principal. Police arrested Jackson Thursday at his home.

Jackson is next due in court Monday.

Man accused of killing his mother, then blaming her death on robbery

A San Bernardino man remained in custody Monday on suspicion of killing his mother in their home and trying to make it look like a botched robbery, police said.

Darrell Jones, 23, was arrested Sunday after police found his mother, Barbara Crumity, bleeding of blunt force trauma on the living room floor at 7:26 a.m., according to the San Bernardino Police Department. She was taken to an area hospital, where she died several hours later of her injuries.

Initially, Jones reportedly told police that his 52-year-old mother may have been injured in a robbery at her home in the 4400 block of North Sierra Way in San Bernardino.

But homicide detectives determined that no robbery had occurred. Evidence found at the home and at a second location linked Jones to his mother’s death, police said.

Jones was arrested in August on suspicion of battery on his mother, police said.
