Florida boy, 8, taken into custody after he 'stole mother's loaded handgun and tried to rob grocery store'

  • Surveillance video shows boy walking into King Foods in West Palm Beach
  • Employees said he went up to the cash register and pointed the gun
  • Boy then said 'Give me the money' before worker took gun from his hand
  • Eboni Alls, boy's mother, said son told her he was going to the park
  • He then stole Eboni's gun from her purse and biked to the store

An eight-year-old Florida boy was taken into custody after he stole his mother's handgun and attempted to rob a local grocery store, police said.
Surveillance video at King Foods in West Palm Beach captured the boy, still wearing his bike helmet, entering the store and heading to an aisle.
Employees said the boy, whose first name is Jaden, walked around for a minute before he went up to the cash register, pointed the gun and said 'Give me the money'.

Proud Mother Eboni Allis...

'At the moment I didn't know if it was a real gun or fake,' employee Robert Espinal told CBS Miami. 'But I took it seriously.' Another employee immediately sprung into action, twisting the boy's wrist so he could take the gun away. Surveillance footage showed an employee then struggle as he tries to take the boy into the office before the store manager called police.

The gun was loaded but there was no bullet in the chamber, a King Foods employee told WPBF.

Eboni Alls, the boy's mother, said her son had told him he was going to the park to play and gave her a hug before he left on his bike. She didn't know anything was amiss until she picked up her purse. 'It was so light. I knew I was missing something. I said, "Where's my gun?"', she told the network. 'The first thing I thought was I hope Jaden don't have my gun.'

The state announced Friday that it will not pursue charges against the boy or his mother and that he has been released from home detention. Jaden is undergoing a mental evaluation after he made comments about hurting himself and will also have to enter a diversion program. He has also been banned from the grocery store.

[h=1]Baby girl fatally shot in face as gunmen open fire outside home[/h]

One or more gunmen opened fire on a house in Compton Tuesday night, fatally shooting a baby girl who was inside the residents, authorities said.
Detectives were trying to determine the motive for the violence but are investigating whether it was somehow related to a gang dispute, said Cmdr. Rod Kusch, who heads the Sheriff's Major Crimes Bureau.

Based on preliminary information, Kusch said the assailant or assailants approached the home on foot at around 7 p.m. and opened fire on several people nearby. At least one of the rounds struck the girl. "Clearly the baby is an unintended victim," Kusch said.

Deputies responded to the scene near the intersection of Holly Avenue and San Marcus Street and found the wounded baby.

Deputies took her to St. Francis Medical Center in a patrol car, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Ulysses Cruz.

She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

It's unclear whether the baby was related to the people the gunmen were targeting.

The site of the shooting, about one block from Roosevelt Elementary School, is one of the more violent neighborhoods in L.A. County, according to crime data compiled by The Times.

During the last six months, Compton has had 475 violent crimes, including eight homicides, according to The Times' database.

Search for Man After Santa Ana Gas Station Baseball Bat Attack on 72-Year-Old

A 72-year-old man was in the intensive care unit after an 18-year-old man was accused of beating him with a baseball bat outside a gas station, police said Wednesday.
Police were asking for the public’s help in finding Samuel Elijah Alvarez, 18, of Santa Ana, who they said beat Jose Chacon.

Sunday’s attack in a 76 gas station parking lot in the 4500 block of Westminster Avenue stemmed from an argument between Alvarez and the victim, Anthony Bertagna, spokesman for the Santa Ana Police Department, said. Police said the 72-year-old was walking out of the gas station when he stumbled and fell on Alvarez’s car.

The two began to argue, and police said the teen grabbed a bat and started beating the man. The 72-year-old went to his car to try to find something to help defend himself, but swung at Alvarez and missed, police said. Bertagna said Alvarez continued to attack the man.

The man was taken to the hospital where he remains in the ICU.
"He's truly loved and adored, and we miss him at home," said the victim's daughter Vanessa Chacon-Johnson.

Investigators said Alvarez is from the neighborhood and is seen at the gas station. The victim's family is hoping someone notices Alvarez and turns him in to police.

Young Activist Shot Dead After Months Of Calling For Peace in Chicago

CHICAGO — Matthew Williams was a passionate anti-violence activist who moved to Chicago in search of a "new life," a friend said. But Williams, 21, was shot and killed early Saturday while inside a friend's home in Park Manor. He was playing video games when a man, who had earlier gotten into an argument with someone else inside the home, "decided to shoot the building up," fatally wounding Williams, said friend and activist Ja'Mal Green.

extralarge.jpg

Williams had campaigned against that kind of violence for months. The 21-year-old, who was born in Chicago but raised in Virginia, moved back to the city a year ago, Green said. He became a passionate activist, speaking out against police brutality and gun violence while calling for a better public education system, Green said.

“He wanted a new life. He wanted to experience something different. While he was here we started protesting, and he wanted to be involved,” Green said.

Williams joined major protests, marching against police brutality on Black Friday and joining rallies for slain black teen Laquan McDonald. Just a week before his death he took part in a political rally outside Trump Tower. His "bubbly" personality made him stand out, Green said.

Just a few days before the shooting, Williams and Green spoke over the phone. Williams and others had been helping and feeding homeless people, he told Green. It was his last conversation with his friend. Hours later, as Williams played games at a friend's home, a shooter opened fire on the building, Green said. One of the bullets hit Williams in his back, Green said.

Williams was taken from the 7100 block of South Calumet Avenue to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition, police said. He was pronounced dead at 12:08 a.m. Saturday of a gunshot wound to his torso, according to Cook County medical examiner's records.

People know the shooter, Green said, but the shooter has not yet been arrested. Williams was not the intended target, but "the innocent one who was killed." Now, Green is calling for communities hit by gun violence to speak up and "get these killers out of our neighborhoods." The "no-snitch rule has to be thrown out of our community," he said.

Black Lives Matter activist fatally shoots himself in front of Ohio Statehouse

A Black Lives Matter activist killed himself on the steps of the Ohio Statehouse, authorities said.

MarShawn McCarrel's family said his emotionally draining work may well have taken a toll on him. The 23-yearold shot himself in front of the Columbus building Monday night, Lt. Craig Cvetan of the State Highway Patrol told the Columbus Dispatch.

“My demons won today. I'm sorry,” the activist, who recently attended the NAACP Image Awards, posted on his Facebook page about 3 p.m., just hours before his body was found near the Statehouse.

article-marshawn-0209.jpg

No one witnessed the shooting, Cvetan said. McCarrel was pronounced dead at the scene.

His mother Leatha Wellington and twin brother MarQuan McCarrel later told the Dispatch he put his causes before himself. They suspect the never-ending and disturbing nature of his activist and charity work left him mentally and physically exhausted in a way they didn't realize, they said. "He impacted so many people, touched so many lives," Wellington said.
"He was just so creative," said McCarrel. "He just wanted to serve people."

McCarrel, who had recently worked with Black Lives Matter, helped organize protests in Ohio after a Missouri cop shot and killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown in 2014. He also founded youth mentorship program Pursuing Our Dreams, which launched Feed the Streets, a project to help Ohio's homeless.

[h=1]Police: East Texas homeowner wins fight against alleged would-be burglar[/h]

Police arrested Kevin Mitchell Gonzales, 28, after they say he tried to enter a Longview residence on Feb. 1, 2016. He lost a fight with the homeowner before his arrest.

A Longview resident thwarted a home invasion Monday. Mugshots of the alleged buglar show he apparently took a beating in the process. Kevin Mitchell Gonzales, 28, was arrested after police say he engaged in a scuffle with a homeowner after trying to enter the dwelling through the garage. CBS 19 in East Texas reported that during the fight Gonzales pulled out a pistol and fired shot. The homeowner then removed the pistol from the suspect and managed to restrain him until police arrived. The homeowner was not injured.

Police also found 18 Lorazepam pills in the suspect’s pants pocket. He faces charges for criminal trespass with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance. Records show this is the fifth time that Gonzales has been booked into a Gregg County Jail.

[h=1]Teen killed in Brooklyn when pal accidentally shoots him while they played Madden NFL video game[/h]A teen killed in a Brooklyn apartment appears to be the victim of a tragic accident: A friend inadvertently shot him while waving a gun as he celebrated a touchdown after playing the Madden NFL video game, police sources said Friday.
The victim, identified by police as Denzil Nash, 16, was shot Thursday night while playing the popular video game with a friend inside a Miller Ave. apartment in East New York. One person was in custody Friday but has not yet been charged.

When police responded to a 911 call at 9:39 p.m. they saw two males leaving the building. The officers stopped them, determined they had been in the apartment, then brought them to the crime scene and found Nash, shot in the face.

article-shot-0212.jpg

He was rushed to Brookdale Hospital, where he died at 10:15 p.m.

Sources said Nash and one of the friends who tried to flee were playing the video game while the other friend was texting. When the suspect scored a touchdown, he took a gun from his waistband and began waving it in front of Nash while gloating. The suspect fired the weapon, apparently unintentionally, striking Nash.

[h=1]Group Trashes 7-Eleven, Brutally Beats CTA Rider with Hammer[/h]

A group of people trashed a Downtown 7-Eleven before brutally attacking a CTA passenger with a hammer, prosecutors said Friday. The CTA victim, who'd been riding the Blue Line to work, suffered a broken orbital bone and may have permanent vision loss, Cook County prosecutors said during a bond hearing Friday.

Police arrested six suspects early Wednesday, including a man who's wanted for allegedly raping and robbing a man with cerebral palsy in Grant Park on Feb. 2.

The recent crime spree started about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday when roughly 10 people walked into a 7-Eleven at 801 S. State St., prosecutors said. Na Eem Hoskins, 24, began dancing to distract the 25-year-old store clerk, prosecutors alleged. Meanwhile, Hoskins' accomplices stuffed food and other items into their pockets and bags. When the clerk tried to stop the group, 19-year-old Deashley Woodard began hitting the man in his head and face, according to prosecutors. Woodard then threw trash around the store before she and her accomplices ran away. The entire incident was captured on 7-Eleven surveillance footage, court records show.

A few hours later, the group, which consisted of about 10 people, boarded a CTA Blue Line train, according to prosecutors. There was only one other passenger on the train, a man on his way to work.

The man was concerned by the group's "loud, rude behavior," prosecutors said, and tried moving to a different train car as the "L" passed through the 800 block of North Milwaukee Avenue.

That's when the group attacked the man — hitting and kicking him as they followed him to another car, authorities said. The group stomped on the victim and allegedly beat him with sticks they had brought on the train. Woodard, meanwhile, pulled a hammer out of her purse and began to beat the man in his back, arms and legs, according to prosecutors. The victim eventually blacked out.

In court Friday, prosecutors told Judge Peggy Chiampas the man could suffer permanent vision loss as a result of the attack, which broke his orbital bone. The entire attack was captured on CTA surveillance footage.

Police were able to arrest six members of the group, including two juveniles, about 2 a.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of South State Street, court records show. Police had released a description of the group after the 7-Eleven robbery, an arrest report said, and CTA security notified beat officers when the suspects got off a Downtown train.

One of the alleged attackers, 23-year-old Allen McDowell, was carrying another man's Ventra card at the time, prosecutors said. The Ventra card's owner had reported a robbery and rape about a week earlier on Feb. 2 in the 300 block of South Columbus Drive, prosecutors said. McDowell has been charged with the rape. Prosecutors allege McDowell met the victim Downtown, where they shared a cigar and alcohol in an alley. The pair then headed to Grant Park, where McDowell threatened the victim with a heavy object and told the man he'd killed people before, according to prosecutors. McDowell allegedly raped the man and forced him to perform oral sex — before stealing the victim's wallet, cellphone and Ventra card.

Milwaukee woman charged with felony murder in plot to rob husband

Charged with felony murder are (clockwise from top) Ian LeFlore, Lakisha Love-Schoos, Oshay Randolph and Diondray Willis. Love-Schoos was married to the victim, Michael Schoos.

Michael R. Schoos

A 23-year-old woman is facing felony murder charges after prosecutors say she set up a robbery targeting her husband, who was killed in the resulting home invasion. Police say Lakisha L. Love-Schoos confessed to her role in planning the robbery of 54-year-old Michael Schoos, according to a criminal complaint released Monday.

Ian Westly LeFlore, 28; Oshay Shayfer Randolph, 23; and Diondray L. Willis, 24 also face felony murder charges. A fifth suspect, Shaquille M. Walker, 22, was charged last month in the killing.

Schoos was shot and killed about 6:15 a.m. Oct. 20 at his home in the 7100 block of W. Appleton Ave.

According to the criminal complaint:

Love-Schoos told police she met LeFlore at a car wash, where the two had sex and devised a plan to rob Schoos in which she would leave the door unlocked, according to the complaint.

Love-Schoos told detectives "she was tired of arguing and fighting" with Schoos. LeFlore told police he had known Love-Schoos for about four years and had just been kicked out of his apartment by his girlfriend when he met up with her. She said Schoos would not be home in the early morning hours, LeFlore recalled.

The next day — Oct. 20 — LeFlore said he was in the area of N. 44th and W. Hadley streets and ran into Willis, Randolph, Walker and a fourth unknown man. The five men got into Willis' car. LeFlore claimed that Willis suggested robbing what he believed to be a drug house on the city's north side. When they got to the house in the 4900 block of W. Fairmount Ave., Willis, Randolph and Walker exited and fired several shots before running back to the car.

LeFlore said since that home invasion was unsuccessful, he suggested they rob the Schoos' residence because he thought no one would be home. The group went to the house, pulled Love-Schoos into the breezeway at gunpoint and ransacked the house. LeFlore said he saw Randolph shoot Schoos in the back.

Investigators also linked the suspects to the killing through ballistic evidence. A detective located a .40-caliber casing in the bedroom where Schoos had been killed. A Milwaukee police technician determined there was a possible correlation between that casing and those casings recovered outside the home on Fairmount Ave., which indicating they may have been fired from the same gun. Those casings are being tested at the State Crime Laboratory. The technician found another possible correlation to a casing picked up at the scene of a shooting on Oct. 15. Randolph is charged in that case.

Randolph and Willis also are charged with first-degree recklessly endangering safety in connection with the W. Fairmount Ave. shooting.

Virginia woman charged with murder of son found in trunk

tonya-slaton.jpg

RICHMOND, Va. --
A Virginia woman whose son's remains were found in her car more than 10 years after he was last seen alive has been charged with murder in his death.
quincy-davis.png

Court documents indicate Tonya Slaton of Richmond was indicted Feb. 1 in Hampton Circuit Court on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of her son, Quincy Jamar Davis. The indictment alleges Slaton killed Davis between July 24, 2004, and July 24, 2005. The Virginian-Pilot reports that Davis would have been 14 or 15 years old at the time.

Human remains found in a vehicle Slaton was driving on Interstate 64 in Hampton in June were identified as Davis'. The medical examiner has not determined the cause of death. Police say Davis was never reported missing.

Slaton was previously charged with concealment of a dead body in relation to the death of her son, but those charges were dropped Tuesday, reports CBS affiliate WTVR.

Police said no one had seen Quincy Davis since about 2004. Quincy was enrolled at Virginia Beach Middle School in September of 2001 and withdrew two years later, according to public school officials. Police said he was last seen when he was in the seventh grade.

Richmond and Hampton search warrant affidavits and other court records showed how a simple traffic stop along I-64 revealed a badly decomposed body stashed in the trunk of a Slaton's car.

A subsequent inquiry revealed the car "was not registered in Virginia and the license plates on the vehicle were not found on file with the Department of Motor Vehicles," according to the affidavit.

The trooper began impounding the vehicle. "During the inventory of the vehicle, Trooper . . . discovered a black trash bag in the trunk . . . There was a strong odor of rotting flesh permeating from the bag." The body in the trunk was double-bagged and sealed with duct tape.

Slaton allegedly threw some clothes on top of the bag, saying the bag contained just clothes. The trooper also noticed a large white stain located on the floorboard behind the driver's seat. "When questioned, (she) explained that she spilled some bleach."

After getting a search warrant, court documents show troopers found Quincy's body in two plastic bags wrapped in duct tape hidden in the trunk. Quincy Davis is not Slaton's only child, State Police say she also has an adult son.

Slaton previously served nearly four years in prison for a 2007 incident in which she fired four gunshots at her boyfriend's front door, WTVR reports. She is due in court for the murder charge later this month.

Man indicted on 20 counts in killings of Savopoulos family, housekeeper

A Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigator walks out of the home where four people were found dead, including Savvas Savopoulos, his wife, Amy Savopoulos, and their housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa. (AP, Tony Powell/Washington Life Magazine, Courtesy of Veralicia Figueroa's family)

Nine months after the bodies of three family members and their housekeeper were found in a stately, upper Northwest home that had been set on fire, federal prosecutors Wednesday indicted their sole suspect with 20 counts including first-degree murder, burglary and kidnapping.

Daron Wint, 35, was charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder in the May 14 murders of businessman Savvas Savopoulos , 46, his wife, Amy, 47, their son, Philip, 10, and housekeeper, 57-year-old Veralicia Figueroa. Police discovered the bodies after firefighters were called to the home to investigate a fire. The four bodies were found inside.

In addition to the charges, the D.C. Superior Court grand jury also found “aggravating circumstances” associated with the fact that the murders were considered “especially heinous, atrocious or cruel” according to the indictment. If found guilty during trial, Wint could face a maximum of life in prison without early release on each of 12 murder charges. The District does not have a death penalty.

So far, Wint, who once worked at a Savopoulous family company, has been the only suspect arrested in the murders. But police and prosecutors have said in court papers and during court hearings that they think others may have been involved in the slayings. Two months after the bodies were discovered, police said they were continuing to pour through “hundreds” of pieces of evidence that at the time they hoped might lead to another suspect.

A D.C. police spokesman said Wednesday the investigation into the murders was continuing.

Police have said that the four victims were held captive overnight and that the attacker or attackers fled with $40,000 delivered to the home as ransom. Detectives have said that a security alarm at the Savopoulos home in the 3200 block of Woodland Dr. was tripped briefly on May 13, a day before the bodies were discovered.

The slayings ripped through the quiet D.C. neighborhood near where Vice President Joe Biden resides.

[h=1]Man, woman accused of setting 4-year-old on fire[/h]

HOUSTON - Police in Houston have charged a man and a woman who allegedly set a 4-year-old girl on fire last April. According to KPRC, the little girl was critically burned in a hotel motel room while she was strapped into a car seat.

Police say the little girl was not taken to the hospital until the next day. She suffered burns over 30 to 40 percent of her body, KPRC reports.

The 4-year-old girl, her aunt, Veronica Deneen Harris, her cousin, Christen Deuante Rogers, and several other children were inside the motel when the incident occurred. At first, Harris and Rogers told police it was all an accident. They claimed alcohol was used to treat the little girl's mosquito bites and wind carried a flame from a nearby cigarette lighter onto the child's body, which caused the fire.

However, investigators didn't believe the pair's story and recently gathered enough evidence to charge the two with injury to a child. The 4-year-old girl reportedly told police that she "was strapped into a chair by her aunt Ronni." According to KPRC, she told police she was strapped into the car seat because she was being "bad."

Deonte Carraway, 22 (pictured on Twitter), was arrested last week after police said he filmed 'vile sexual acts' between children

A volunteer teacher's aide in Maryland who was arrested for making sexual videos of at least 17 children reportedly provided his victims with cell phones to use for filming.

Deonte Carraway, 22, is accused of directing 'vile sexual acts between minors during the school day on school grounds' while he worked at Judge Sylvania Woods Elementary in Glenarden.

NBC
is reporting that Carraway would hand out multiple phones to students before collecting them at the end of the day.

According CBS12.com, sources told reporter Brad Bell that Carraway would summon his victims using the phones and gather pornographic images through the free messaging app, KiK.

Police said they recovered more than 40 videos showing children performing sexual acts alone or with each other, under the direction of Carraway, according to the New York Post.

Police say Carraway admitted to producing child pornography after a relative of one nine-year-old victim saw an explicit photograph on his phone. Seventeen children have now been identified as victims, with court documents stating they are between the ages of nine and 13. Police said the investigation could last for months and uncover more victims.

3 arrested for attacking Uber driver with beer bottle[/h]

ARLINGTON, Va. – Three men were arrested after police said the trio attacked an Uber driver with a beer bottle Saturday night, Arlington County police said. The incident happened on Saturday around 10.55 p.m. Police said the Uber driver was transporting six people and despite telling them not to, the passengers opened alcoholic beverages. That is when the driver terminated the trip, pulled over and the passengers exited the vehicle.

According to police, when Justin Allen Norconk, 26, Jeffery Eugene Rowe Jr.,26, and Lance Daniel Ingram, 25, went back to get their belongings from the vehicle, they got into an argument with the driver. Police said the Uber driver was hit with a beer bottle and a window in his car was shattered by the three suspects.

"I think it's pretty disgusting that there is behavior like that," said Rachael Mrad who rides Uber. "I rely on the train and the bus and Uber to get to and from the hospital. It's a vital service so I am ashamed this happened. I wish there were more protections for the drivers. I hope they throw the book at them. It's unacceptable," said Uber rider Jay Forehand.

The attack has Uber driver, Sunny, thinking twice about safety. "The main thing I'm concerned about: is this passenger going to be ok, is he going to be nuts and will it be safe for me or not," he said.
The Uber driver who was attacked has cuts on his face and a bump on his head.

Norconk was charged with malicious wounding and assault by mob. Ingram was charged with assault by mob and Rowe Jr. was charged with destruction of property. All three are being held without bond.

Boyfriend indicted in Jessica Chambers case

A Panola County native suspected in another homicide has been indicted in the December 2014 burning death of Courtland teen Jessica Chambers. Quinton Tellis, 27, originally of Courtland, was indicted on capital murder charges by a special grand jury in Panola County as he sat in the Ouachita Parish Jail in Monroe, La., where he is being held in the August death of a University of Louisiana-Monroe exchange student.

Tellis is believed to have been the last person with Chambers the night she was killed. The two had a relationship in the weeks leading up to her death, officials said. Chambers and Tellis were eight years apart in age. They grew up in the same neighborhood and had gone to South Panola High School. Further details of their relationship were not public prior to the Tuesday press conference.

Tellis was living in Monroe with a new wife when Monroe police arrested him in the stabbing death of Meing-Chen Hsiao, 34, of Taiwan. Hsiao had been missing for more than a week when her body was found Aug. 8 in her apartment. Police said Hsiao's homicide appeared to be very personal.

Tellis has not been charged with her slaying, but according to jail records, he has been charged with three counts of unauthorized use of an access card and one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

The police report says Tellis used a Chase Bank debit card belonging to Hsiao about 11 p.m. Aug. 7. On that transaction, he withdrew $.07. When it was used again Aug. 18, it was allegedly used at 10:35 p.m. for $500 and again at 3:04 a.m. for another $500. Police said he admitted to using the debit card on all three occasions. They added there were ATM surveillance photos of him using the card.

Authorities found a quarter-pound of marijuana in a bedroom of his house, packaged for sale.

Tellis' Facebook page indicates he married his fiancee on or around the day Hsiao's body was found.

MDOC records show he was sentenced to five years in prison in January 2010 for residential burglary. He was released on probation in August 2010, but his probation was subsequently revoked. He was sentenced again in December 2011 for residential burglary. He was also sentenced to three years in February 2012 for residential burglary. He was released on probation in October 2014 and absconded supervision in August.

In May 2011, he had a case for simple assault and domestic violence-simple dismissed after his accusers failed to appear to prosecute. He had pleaded not guilty to charges of disturbance of a family, records show. In July 2011, he was referred to the grand jury for burglary and grand larceny.

While he was incarcerated, MDOC records show various violations, including refusing to work, and staff said he made threatening statements toward them in 2014.

Police ID Ann Arbor mother found in burned-out home

The body of a woman found in a burned-out home on Detroit’s east side was in fact Heidi Walker -- the 38-year-old Ann Arbor woman who had been missing along with her 4-year-old daughter, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said on Monday.

The second body found in the home has still not been identified, because the injuries are too severe, Craig said, and more time will be needed to confirm whether the body belonged to Savannah Walker. In meantime, the AMBER Alert that had been issued for Savannah was cancelled Monday morning, said First Lt. Mike Shaw, a Michigan State Police spokesperson.

Savannah Walker

Walker and her daughter had been missing since last Tuesday, when Walker’s oldest daughter, who lives in Howell, called police because she had “information her mom was dead on a bed in Detroit with her daughter.”

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office handled the initial report, but an AMBER Alert was not issued until 2 a.m. Saturday, after the family member called the Michigan State Police on Friday. When asked whether the three-day delay could have changed the possible outcome, Craig said last week, "I can't say that."

In response, Livingston County Undersheriff Michael Murphy said on Saturday: “We’re very disappointed that there’s fingers pointed in this incident because obviously the people making the disparaging remarks about the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department have no idea what they’re talking about.”

Within hours of the AMBER Alert being issued, two bodies were found in a burned-out house of the city’s east side in the 4700 block of Lakeview near Forest. Firefighters found the bodies when responding to a report of a fire.

Marcus Tyrone Hightower

Police have not said how they died, or what could have led to their killings. But they did begin looking for a person of interest, and one day later, Marcus Tyrone Hightower, 33, who has ties to Detroit, walked into the 9th (Gratiot) Precinct and turned himself in, police have said. It is not yet clear what charges Hightower will be facing, as prosecutors are still reviewing the case. Craig said there was a history of domestic disputes between Hightower and Walker.

An in-law of the missing woman and her daughter, who declined to be named, told the Free Press on Sunday: “The fact that Marcus is in custody is a big relief to all of us.”
