[h=1]Teacher stabbed in front of students in Long Beach[/h]
LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — An elementary school teacher was fatally stabbed while watching two dozen students play at a park during an outing that her school called "Fun Friday."

Long Beach police said Kellye Taylor, 53, was at a playground near the Huntington Academy when a man later identified as the father of her grandchildren came up from behind and attacked her around 1:30 p.m. Friday. Officers arrested Steven Brown, 50, of Long Beach, soon afterward.

Investigators recovered the "sharp instrument" they believe Brown used, Sgt. Aaron Eaton said. Brown was taken to Long Beach's jail, where he was held on $1 million bail.

Witnesses told the Long Beach Press-Telegram that Taylor was stabbed in the neck while two dozen children played nearby. After she was attacked, some of the children ran back to the private school owned and operated by Taylor's family.
"How could they do something like this in front of these babies," Pamela Huffman, Taylor's younger sister who also works at the school, told the newspaper. "All I could do was run to her. I saw her slip away. I knew she wasn't going to make it."

Taylor had custody of her grandchildren, which upset Brown, Huffman said. Police said Saturday they have not developed a possible motive, and didn't know the status of the relationship between Brown and Taylor's daughter.

"She loved children, and she loved being around children," Vanessa Kelly, another of Taylor's sisters, told KABC-TV. "She loved teaching children, and that's what she did."

The Huntington Academy serves nearly 30 students from kindergarten to sixth grade. The school's director, Carrie Bryant, is the mother of Taylor and Huffman.

When school resumes Monday, students and staff will have access to counselors.

"These babies are not going to want to go back to that park," Huffman said. "That was our park. Our park. Now what are we going to do?"

The Long Beach Register reported that the park, located near the school, had recent problems with drugs and crime.

"When a school teacher can't even be safe in a park, it's just ridiculous," resident Doug Hunt told the newspaper.

The four men accused of beating to death an ex-Marine and single father will spend the next 20 years in prison after agreeing to a deal approved Wednesday morning by a Cobb County judge.

Zach Gamble, 34, was repeatedly punched in the face and kicked by the men — one of whom, Tarell Winston Secrest, 37, of Marietta, had been a friend — while lying on the ground in the parking lot of a Cobb apartment complex in March 2012. Gamble was discovered about 40 minutes later lying unconscious by a taxi driver who had accidentally run over his leg. He died in the hospital two weeks later after his family removed him from life support.

Prosecutor Michael Carlson described the beating as “severe, brutal and ultimately lethal.”

Secrest and the other defendants — Arthur Lynell Batchelor, 38, of Acworth; Jason Scott Hill, 36, of Marietta; and Sean DGene Hall, 39, of Atlanta — agreed to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery and were sentenced to 30 years in prison with 20 to serve. Malice murder charges were dropped due to questions about legal provocation, the degree of culpability of each defendant and the lack of eyewitness testimony, Carlson said.


The victim’s friends and family, who kept the case in the public eye, packed the courtroom Wednesday morning. Gamble, who survived two tours in Iraq as a Marine corporal and squad leader, left behind a 7-year-old son.

Tarell Secrest, Arthur Batchelor, Jason Hill and Sean Hall were charged in Gamble’s death. In court, lawyers revealed an explicit text message from the victim to one of the suspects that touched off a deadly chain of events.

Secrest said he'd invited Gamble, an old friend, to his alcohol- and cocaine-fueled birthday party. Batchelor, Hill and Hall were there and told investigators Gamble had been kicked out for making graphic comments about he witnessed in Iraq and other lewd statements.

Then, the explosive text message led to a parking lot skirmish.

“Zach Gamble made an effort to strike or punch or push and actually hit Arthur Batchelor. And when Arthur Batchelor was hit, everyone panicked and went nuts and assaulted with kicks and hit on Mr. Gamble,” Cobb County Police Detective John Dawes said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WTVD) -- The Cumberland County Sheriff's office has arrested a former Fayetteville middle school principal.

David Ellis Edwards, 49, of Tobago Place is charged with two counts of second-degree forcible sex offense, two counts of sexual acts with a student, and five counts of taking indecent liberties with a minor. Judge Tal Baggett added Edwards is also facing crimes against nature charges.

Detectives say there are at least three alleged victims. The sex acts allegedly took place at Ramsey Street Alternative and Douglas Byrd Middle Schools.

Deputies said the victims told them that, between 2009 to 2011, they were touched inappropriately or were forced to participate in sexual acts with Edwards on two school campuses- Douglas Byrd Middle and Ramsey Street Alternative.

The victims, all males, were between the ages of 11 and 14 years old. On at least one occasion, the crimes were committed while a parent unknowingly sat in a waiting area in the office of the school.

According to sources, Edwards pastors First Missionary Baptist Church in St. Pauls.

Edwards was arrested this Friday after turning himself in to detectives. He resigned from his position as principal six weeks ago, telling Cumberland County Schools it was for educational opportunities. At the time, the system said they were not aware of the pending investigation.

Bond was set at $140,000. As long as Edwards faces the charge, a judge has ordered him to stay away from anyone under the age of 16.

Edwards made a first appearance in a Cumberland County Courtroom Friday afternoon. He declined to comment to ABC1. Edwards' attorney Jim Parrish told ABC11 his client is not guilty.

Brooklyn group of black youths blocks white couple's car, bloody victims in racial attack: cops

Authorities say Ronald and Alana Russo were pummeled by attackers — ranging in age from 12 to 18 — who showered them with racial slurs.


A group of 10 black youths — one of them a 12-year-old girl — surrounded a white couple's car in Brooklyn, viciously beating the husband and yanking the wife to the pavement by her hair as they peppered the two with racial slurs, authorities said.

“Get those crackers!” some of them screamed, according to court papers. “Get that white whore!”

The confrontation erupted about 7 p.m. Monday, as the marauding group crossed Avenue U at E. 58th St. near Kings Plaza Shopping Center in Mill Basin.

Ronald Russo, 30, and his wife, Alanna, apparently had the green light and the husband honked at the group to get out of the way. The rowdy kids started kicking the car, according to the criminal complaint. Ronald Russo got out to check on potential damage to his vehicle.

And that’s when all hell broke loose.

Ronald Russo was dragged to the ground. Then he was punched and kicked in the head. He felt more blows all over his body, investigators said. He suffered a fractured nose, a broken septum, a blood clot and abrasions to his shoulder. He was treated and released from Beth Israel Medical Center.


In the midst of the attack, there was a steady chorus of epithets. “White motherfucker!” screamed the attackers, who ranged in age from 12 to 18.

Alanna Russo, 30, was calling 911 when the 12-year-old girl pulled the woman’s hair and threw her to the ground. The victim’s head slammed into the concrete. She suffered a black eye, bleeding and difficulty breathing, prosecutors said, but she refused medical attention.

Her husband’s iPhone was stolen during the melee, according to cops.

The kids scattered after the brazen attack. But two teens, Kashawn Kirton and Daehrell Finch, were arrested at a nearby Lowe’s store parking lot minutes afterward.

Retired radio personality arrested 'after soliciting sex with a 7-year-old from undercover cop online'

A retired New York radio personality has been charged in a sting operation with trying to transport a 7-year-old girl to the U.S. Virgin Islands for sex.

David Herman, 77, of Airmont, New York, and St Croix, was arrested Thursday at the St Croix airport, where federal authorities said he had expected to meet the girl and her mother flying in from New York.

Herman allegedly thought he'd been corresponding online with a woman about her child but was actually talking to an undercover officer from Bergen County in New Jersey, according to U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman.

Herman allegedly used the screen name 'david121482' in a Yahoo! chatroom to talk to 'Kris' who he thought was the 36-year-old mother of a 7-year-old girl named Lexi.

'Age 6 is the perfect time to start her being loved that way,' Herman allegedly wrote to the undercover cop. 'I find girls that age incredibly sexy, soft and their innocence is also a huge turn on for me.'

According to the criminal complaint: 'Herman promised that he would not hurt "Lexi" though he might have to be "forceful" with her. Herman suggest that they could give "Lexi" some alcohol to relax her'.

The U.S. attorney's office confirmed Herman had worked at FM radio station WNEW, where he was a pioneering rock 'n' roll disc jockey. During his years as a DJ, Herman interviewed the likes of Mick Jagger, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, and Pete Townshend.

Herman was scheduled to make an initial court appearance Friday in St. Croix.
