A 20-year-old with a long history of arrests was charged with shooting a recent Atlanta police recruit in the face during a foot chase Friday night.


Frank Emmitt Nance was booked into the Fulton County Jail overnight and charged with nine criminal counts, including aggravated assault against a police officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of cocaine.

Nance, of Atlanta, is charged with shooting Officer Reggie Robinson in the face around 6:30 p.m. near the intersection of Ralph David Abernathy Boulevard and Lee Street.

Robinson, 35, graduated from the police academy in November and was dispatched to the southwest Atlanta neighborhood Friday night to investigate possible drug activity. He gave chase when a suspicious man ran from him and was shot moments later, police say.

Robinson was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and is in stable condition, said police spokesman John Chafee.

Records show Nance has been in and out of the Fulton County Jail several times over the last four years, including an arrest in April on assault and battery charges. He waived his first court appearance Saturday morning and was ordered held without bond until his preliminary hearing scheduled on January 25.

Police would not say how Nance sustained injuries evident in his mug shot taken Friday night. APD spokesman Gregory Lyon said the department’s internal review board will investigate all aspects of the shooting — as they do any time an officer is involved in a shooting — to ensure all policies and procedures were followed.

A 17-year-old is being sought in the killing of a Fort Carson soldier and his wife during a burglary, Colorado Springs police said late Wednesday.

Police issued a warrant for the arrest of Macyo Joelle January on suspicion of first-degree murder. Police said January should be considered armed and dangerous.

He is suspected in the deaths of Staff Sgt. David Dunlap and his wife, Whitney Butler, who were gunned down Monday when they returned home and encountered a burglar, police said.

The Fort Carson soldier was a helicopter mechanic for the post’s new combat aviation brigade, and had arrived in Colorado Springs just two months ago, the post said Wednesday.

Butler had worked for Enterprise Rent-a-Car since 2009, said a Christy Cavallini, a company spokeswoman. After postings in Virgina Beach and Norfolk, Va. Butler transferred to the company's Colorado Springs insurance operations division two months ago, Cavallini said.

"It’s an extreme tragedy that’s going on out here,” Ruiz said. "We’re extending our condolences out to the family. I guess everybody's just trying to get through it right now.”

Dunlap, 37, was a mechanic for the AH-64D Apache attack helicopter. He deployed once to Iraq, from June 6, 2007 through Aug. 6, 2008.

Dunlap and his new wife, Whitney Butler, 35, moved into their home at 222 Bassett Drive in October. They returned home Monday and encountered a burglar, who fatally shot both of them and escaped, police said. The couple was expecting their first child, a friend said.

HOUSTON—A Houston man charged in the fatal stabbing of his wife appeared in a Harris County courthouse overnight. Investigators said Lawrence Clinton Chambers, 40, viciously stabbed 43-year-old Jemal Lockridge Chambers more than 100 times. He's also accused of beating his stepson with a frying pan.

Chambers is charged with murder and injury to a child.


Jemal Chambers and her 13-year-old son were found covered in blood at their home in the 2800 block of Tidewater on February 3.

Mrs. Chambers’ 14-year-old daughter stayed at her grandmother’s house that weekend and had become worried after not hearing from her mom. She arrived home around 11 p.m. Sunday, but did not see her mom’s car in the driveway. The burglar bars were locked and all was quiet. When she went inside, she found her mom's body in the bedroom and went running to the neighbors for help.


“I saw the look on that little girl’s face and she’ll have nightmares for the rest of her life,” Robert Chavis, the neighbor, said.

Mrs. Chambers was pronounced dead at the scene. Her son was rushed to Texas Children’s Hospital in serious condition. He suffered blunt force trauma to the head, cuts with a knife and disfigurement to the face.


The only person missing was Lawrence Chambers and the family vehicle. He turned himself in Monday after confessing to his brother, investigators said.


Lawrence Chambers told his brother that his wife came at him with a knife and he “just lost it,” documents state. Chambers also told his brother that he could not remember what he did to his stepson.


Court documents detailed what happened that night.


Investigators said Jemal Chambers had tried to lock herself in the bedroom, but her husband forced his way inside, breaking the door frame. Once inside, he stabbed her 119 times, with most of the knife wounds to the back of the head.


He hit his stepson so hard with the frying pan that it shattered.


The knife and the skillet were both recovered at the scene.


Chambers is now being held without bond. An order of protection was issued on behalf of the 13-year-old boy.


Chambers has a criminal past and had already served 10 years in prison for a prior conviction.

[h=1]More charges announced in East St. Louis church robbery[/h]
Four people were charged Friday in connection with an armed holdup at an East St. Louis church.

Howard Dotson Jr., Rufus Thomas and Kenneth C. Walton IV were charged with 12 counts each of armed robbery.

Thomas, 20, of the 1400 block of Henrietta Avenue in East St. Louis, also was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was being held at the St. Clair County Jail with bail set at $2.55 million.


Dotson, 17, of the 2400 block of Gaty Avenue in East St. Louis, was jailed with bail set at $2.05 million and Walton, 20, of the 1000 block of North 71st Street in East St. Louis, was jailed with bail set at $2.075 million.


Dotson and Thomas were taken into custody the day after the robbery and charged then with one count each of obstruction of justice. Walton was taken into custody by Sauget police two days later.


A fourth person, Simone C. Foster, 25, of the 3900 block of Alcoa Street in Alorton, was charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly withholding information from authorities in the investigation. She was at the St. Clair County Jail with bail set at $35,000.


Up to 100 people were in IRA Grove Free Will Baptist Church on Jan. 27 for a special evening program when three men burst into the church and demanded valuables, police said.


East St. Louis police Chief Michael Floore said those at the church ranged from small children to people in their 80s.


"I was dumbfounded to believe someone would have the audacity to go in and rob a church," he said.

Three Grayson High School teenagers were riding the bus to school Dec. 17 when they hatched a plan to rob a classmate who collected expensive basketball shoes, a Gwinnett County police detective testified Friday.


Two days later that classmate, 14-year-old Paul Sampleton, was dead — killed by three bullets to the head during a robbery at his Snellville townhouse that unfolded the same day as the trio had planned. Sampleton was bound and killed in his kitchen just minutes after he arrived home on Dec. 19 following early release from school for the holidays.

The three teenagers, Larnell Sillah, 15, Achiel Morgan, 15, and Romaine Stewart, 18 — all of whom are being charged as adults — are alleged to be active members of a street gang called the Young Wavy Goons.

Each would later recount in separate interviews with police that they had planned some details of the robbery during a conversation on the bus, Gwinnett County Police Homicide Detective Andrew Whaley testified at a preliminary hearing for the boys on Friday.


They allegedly agreed Morgan and Stewart would intercept Sampleton as he approached his house. They would create a diversion by engaging him in a fight while Sillah snuck inside Sampleton’s home and snatched the 14-year-old’s valuables, Whaley testified.


The teens went so far as to feign friendship with Sampleton, who played on the freshman football team with Morgan, in the days leading up to the robbery. They invited him to Stewart’s house to get a haircut so they could follow him home afterward and get his address, according to Whaley.
“They said they were gonna rob him for his shoes,” Whaley said. “That was the main focus.”


Gwinnett County Magistrate Judge Phil Wiley found probable cause to bind over to Superior Court a murder charge against the suspected triggerman, Sillah, and armed robbery charges against Morgan and Stewart for allegedly helping to plan the robbery.

There is no explanation or reason that could justify anything less than a life sentence, Circuit Judge Adrian G. Soud said in punishing 17-year-old Javarris Jawon Lane for killing and sexually abusing a 13-month-old daughter of his mother’s friend.

Lane had previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, aggravated child abuse and sexual battery of a child younger than 12. Soud sentenced him Friday to two life sentences in prison without the possibility of parole — the maximum allowable sentence under the law.


When Soud imposed the sentence, Lane’s mother screamed, “No!” and had to be taken outside the Jacksonville courtroom as she loudly cried. She was later taken out of the courthouse in a wheelchair as she continued to cry.


Members of the child’s family also had to be escorted out when testimony detailing her injuries became too gruesome. At one point a man exited the courtroom breathing heavily while glaring over at Lane.


The number of bailiffs in the courtroom tripled as the hearing continued, and when Soud announced his sentence about a half dozen bailiffs stood between the crowd and the table where Lane sat.


Authorities said Lane shook Alexandria Williams as the toddler cried and then struck her head repeatedly against a dresser in September 2011 in his family’s home on West First Street. Lane also used an object on the child’s privates the same day.


She died after being on life support for several days.


The parents of the victim, Robert Williams and Sharnell Johnson, both asked Soud to put Lane in jail for life.

Feeding bleach to baby was 'dumbest decision ... in my life'

The man who reportedly mixed bleach into his infant daughter's formula on Sunday morning said he was only trying to help her breathe easier with a home remedy he heard about from a friend.

Carron Washington, 20, spoke to about a dozen members of the media Monday afternoon in a hastily called news conference that was ended abruptly by a member of the Marion County Public Defender's Office.

"It's probably the dumbest decision I've made in my life," Washington said before the meeting ended.

Washington said his daughter, Cadlynn, had suffered from breathing problems since her birth on Dec. 14.

The girl was born with her esophagus detached from her stomach, which required surgery.

Washington said he would never intentionally hurt his daughter and only added less than a capful of bleach to about two ounces of her formula because a friend from school told him she used the remedy with her child.

Washington, who said he is a "pre-med" student at the College of Central Florida, said the friend was a classmate.

While old home remedies involving kerosene, whiskey and even urine are abundant, ingesting bleach is not common.

The girl's mother, Therese Roberts, was upset when Washington admitted he gave the girl bleach.

"The last time I talked to her was that night, before I got arrested... I told her I did it. She was emotional about it," said the soft-spoken Washington.

The baby was listed in stable condition at Shands at the University of Florida in Gainesville on Monday afternoon, according to Lt. Billy Woods of the Ocala Police Department.

Attempts Monday to reach Roberts or members of her family were not successful.

3 charged for choking, beating puppy to death


GREENVILLE, N.C. -Three Pitt County men are behind bars, accused of choking and beating a puppy to death.


A neighbor witnessed it all. It happened in Greenville Tuesday afternoon on Carolyn Street.

Pitt County deputies arrested Demetrius Crumble, Evan Harrington and Kendrick Fitchett. Investigators say the three men choked a 4-month-old Pit Bull puppy with phone cords, took turns beating the puppy with a PVC pipe and then threw her in a ditch.

A neighbor, Amy Wirthlin, and her 15-year-old daughter, watched in horror and called 911. "My daughter and I actually located her deceased body in that ditch with her collar on," said Wirthlin.

"Unfortunately the images in my head will stay with me," said Wirthlin.

"There's no respect for life whether it's human or animal. And you know, we deal with a lot and see a lot unfortunately, but when it comes to animals and kids it kind of takes it to another level," said Deputy Allen.

As for Wirthlin, she's taking it upon herself to be a voice for the innocent puppy. "These three men won't be able to do this to another animal again," she said.


Harrington and Crumble both have prior criminal records. Deputies say Crumble also faces additional drug charges.

According to information presented in court, the defendants sexually abused three minors from 2004 to 2009. When the abuse began, the children ranged in age from 2 to 4.

Fulton County District Attorney's spokeswoman Yvette Jones said the victims were molested and forced to perform sex acts on the defendants. Two of the children were also prostituted.

A Fulton County Superior Court judge called the abuse "one of the most heinous crimes" she has ever seen in her criminal justice career, Jones said.

The children were rescued after undergoing forensic interviews with police. All three of them received therapy; Jones said one of the victims was so traumatized that he has been in a psychiatric residential treatment facility since 2009.

The defendants all face charges of aggravated child molestation. Thomas Johnson has also been charged with aggravated sodomy and was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences, while Maryland Johnson faces additional charges of rape and cruelty to children, and was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences plus 70 years.

Crystal Johnson has also been charged with sexual battery, aggravated sodomy, rape, cruelty to children and pimping. She was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences plus 150 years.

Drunken thug at Los Angeles strip club rams 2 men with BMW during brawl, severing their legs

L.A. police say Terrence Conrad Meeks, 40, used his car as a battering ram to attack two Latino men he was brawling with outside a strip club early Sunday. One of the men lost both his legs in the attack, while the other lost one limb.


A fight at a Los Angeles strip club ended in gory fashion early Sunday when a man rammed two others with his car, severing their legs, authorities said.


Terrence Conrad Meeks, 40, of Paramount, was fighting with the men at Sam's Hofbrau, a strip joint in downtown L.A., at around 3:30 a.m. when the brawl spilled into the parking lot, police said.

Meeks, who cops said was drunk, hopped into his white BMW and barreled into the pair, pining them against a Mini Cooper they were standing in front of, local KTLA television reported.


Both men were rushed to a local hospital, where one man had both legs amputated above the knee and the other lost one leg. They were listed in stable condition on Sunday afternoon.


The victims were Latino men, 24 and 57, but otherwise not identified, KTLA reported.

Video footage posted on YouTube showed the aftermath of the carnage. Blood and gore were visible on the BMW's smashed hood, while the Mini Cooper was backed onto the curb in front of the club.


Meeks was arrested on charges of attempted manslaughter, DUI and held on $500,000 bail.


Cops were also looking into whether to charge him with a hate crime, based on reports that racial slurs were yelled during the brawls.
