Perhaps, but I find it hard to believe that people intentionally go out of their way to appear stupid. One has to conclude that they really are.

Well yes, they are obviously stupid, but they'll push it with certain things simply because they have nothing intelligent to say that will defend or forward their position. So as a last resort, they just troll. When you let them get you exasperated, they walk away feeling satisfied and tell themselves they won something. I won't give them that satisfaction.
