STDs rife among US teenage girls
Human papillomavirus, HPV
HPV, which can cause cancer, was found to be the most common STD
One in four teenage girls in the United States has a sexually-transmitted disease, a study has indicated.

abstinance only works that is proof

Let condoms be advertised on TV. We can advertise viagra but not condoms ???

they can't get condoms at a store?

In Mississippi?

If they want the whole world to know, and the pharmacist that they're whole family has been seeing since they were four. But then again, ignorant simple-minded conservatives think things like that are A-OK, and no big deal, since "technically" they could get condoms.

Hey look, technically a jail prisoner is free. He could break out and run for the border any time he wanted to, yet he CHOOSES to stay in prison.

They probably don't use condoms because their schools go through special measures to prevent them from having access to them.
Very few schools have any such measures to prevent people from getting condoms. In fact, I'd love to see which schools actually reach out into the community to make it more difficult for students to get condoms than any other person.

Amazingly, according to the report last night, they don't believe that they are at risk. Such information is definitely given to them in abstinence education rejected by most schools as an option even to be included in their education.

Of course, like Intelligent design and evolution Damo. We're just discriminating against something that has a great deal of scientific and purposeful value.

i was just asking. I live in a big city. I can buy condoms at four different places within a three to four block radius of my place. A small time might obviously be different.

You were just talking about getting condoms which is why I asked. You didn't mention anything about parents etc.

OK. :)

So mentioning to teens that they are actually at high risk for STD and maybe should abstain has no scientific basis? You are basing this on what?

I mention that most schools won't even mention this as an option and you say that it is equal to ID? Total rubbish strawman. If you hit that with your sword you will be splattered with it.

Damo, if there's anything that's brushed over in the US in this day in age, it's NOT abstinence.

Again, that depends on which school area you live in. It may not be brushed over in your area, therefore the kids would have a good knowledge that they are at risk for STD, which was the main reason that kids were not being tested according to the study you cited.

Kids who live in areas that do not include any abstinence education do not receive as much clear direction in that area as those whose schools do include them. Most schools will not include it. Shoot, we have Boulder hiring a bunch of people who have no expertise actually encouraging them to have more sex.

Water is just being his usual dumbass troll self. You can get condoms at convenience, grocery and drug stores over the counter. You don't need to involve the family pharmacist.

And so... you prove my point. I never received condoms from school. Still used them when I was a teen and do so now.

This study includes HPV, which is pretty common if you are at all sexually active, most strains are harmless and condoms are only somewhat effective in preventing the spread. Blaming this on abstinence only education is pretty stupid since that or staying in a relationship with one partner who has had no other partners or who you are sure is clean is really the only way to be certain. To further blame it on not giving out condoms in school is retarded.

But, personally I think abstinence only is stupid. Frankly, sex is worth the risk. And I really don't have much problem with making condoms easily available, but I don't see why it has to be done through the school. At concerts in the SF area their use to always be people handing out gobs of them.

Abstinence only is stupid, but actually rejecting the concept in education at all, as they do in places like Boulder is equally stupid.

I am glad I read the whole thread. I was going to say just this. Abstinence plus is the best way to teach kids about sex.

I seriously doubt that Boulder, or any other locality, doesn't teach that abstinence is a good thing. If they don't, they are stupid.

It's part of any basic comprehensive sex-ed program: abstinence is good, but if you aren't going to abstain, practice safe sex.
