These religious community members were slaves - serfs. They were not even asked where they would live, they were simply brought.
And in general, in Europe until the spring of nations there was almost total slavery. There was imperialism.
 
The vast majority of Europeans are descendants of slaves. Northern Europeans are all descendants of slaves.

By the way, Christianity was originally and by design a religion for slaves. This is a typical religion of the slave-owning empire, and where there is a god the master of slaves, and the apostles themselves called for slavery.
