Let me start with a broad question and see where this goes: :)

What role has the left played in the shaping of modern political though/public policy?

I see them as having improved the opportunities for minorities in our country.

they ended the excesses of the industrial age and saved our democracy frim the monied interests

I don't actually think it's been saved. The Democrats - which you're wrongly equating to "the left" - haven't come close to ending the influence of money on politics.

They increased tax and decreased opportunity on all Americans whilst killing opportunity for all Americans!

Created a dependant sub culture in the USA.

They've stamped out liberty and opportunity, and brought about tyranny.

The same thing many who made distilled spirits said about the whiskey tax and Washington ordering thousands of troops to squash the tax rebellion.

It always was a myth in the USA.

For sure...The Reds are coming!

They already have a mean looking Cuban! Aroldis Chapman

There are far too many intangibles and undefined interpretations of the various language you are using to formulate the question. By their very nature, political thought and public policy are two completely different things, this is why we have politics. Therefore, the "role" of anything, would be quite different with regard to each of these, by process of rational thought. What do you mean by "role" exactly? An active participation in formation or change, or simply an influence toward those ends? And finally, who do you mean by "the left?" Socialists? Progressives? Libertarians? Democrats? RINOs? There is a broad range of "leftists" in our culture, and this has to be defined before we can engage in any sort of intelligent debate regarding the question. We also need to define what you mean by "has?" Throughout all of history? In the past few years? In modern times? And what do you mean by "modern?" Do you see where I am coming from? You have presented us with a question that is formulated from terms and words that are undefined and essentially meaningless in any sort of rational intelligent discussion, and until these are defined, you will have unsatisfactory results in such attempts, as evidenced by your responses so far.
