Not as a result of the schizophrenia, but as a consequence of the medication. Many undergo a huge weight gain (no pun intended :o) and of that group a significant number develop Type II diabetes. This type of diabetes can be directly attributed to the overeating and resultant weight gain.

Newer generation antipsychotic medications attempt to address this negative side effect. We're investigating the brain systems and functions that are involved.
 
Yeah makes sense, My totally wacked out ex sister in law blimped up big time after staying on her meds. finally....
but to her credit she has lately been walking a lot and lost about 60 lbs or more. Still pretty paranoid and such but light years ahead of totally wacked out.
She is on lithium and a few more things. They did try a new gen med on her recently and it seems to be working ok.
