The "separation" hypothesis is definitely a much more theologically palatable concept than the concept of a vituperative vicious punishing God who grants INFINITE punishment for sins committed in a finite amount of time. (Same God as who so loved the world...)

The Catholic view of hell is explained most definitively by Dante in the Divine Comedy. The separation from God that is described is mostly a removal of protection that allows Satan and his minions to inflict what they see as just punishment for sins. Per Dante, it is not God punishing the sinners, simply God not restraining Satan from punishing sinners.
The Catholic view of hell, which has very little Biblical basis, is very much a place of eternal torment.
