Ah race relations, that old chestnut. Where did that go wrong?
I'd suggest it was Derrick Bell.
MLK had a dream, exquisite in it's simplicity. Judge people by the content of their character, not the colour of their skin. A universal truth, applying to everyone. A straightforward message that everyone can get behind.
But that was derailed by Bell. He introduced Marxist theory into serious race relations debate. Marxist theory, that x constitutes a monolithic political class, that power is distributed in à binary way between the oppressed class and the oppressor class and that this can only be rectified by revolution is repugnant in it simplicity and observably wrong.
By introducing Marxist theory (CRT) and propagating this as the axiom from which race relations is discussed, he ensured that people will always be judged by the colour of their skin and not the content of their character. A person's skin colour dictates which class they are in, the oppressor or the oppressed. It dictates whether or not racist acts can be committed against them. It creates fallacies of privilege. It drives the wedge further.
And all this is because it rests on a bad assumption. That Marxist theory is correct. It isn't. Monolithic classes do not exist and power is observably more fluid than binary Marxist theory states. It's amazing that in the C21st that the gigantic flaws in this theory are still being taken seriously simply because it has been rebranded.
Maybe racism can be fought. But by being less Bell and more King.
