Romney Tells Millionaire Donors What He REALLY Thinks of Obama Voters

I didn't say that Social Security benefits are taxable income (though they often are). I said that they are income. You said that they weren't income.

I said they weren't taxable income, and that is a fact. They aren't. Never have been, as far as I know. Romney didn't say anything about retirees drawing pensions. He said that 47% of the people are going to vote for Obama... that's either true or false. He said these people are mostly those who believe the government owes them stuff and they are entitled to it. He didn't mention retirees, many of which do not believe the government owes them stuff and they are entitled to it. Those are things you are interjecting into his comments from MAY, because your candidate has a failing record as president and can't run on it.

So you think the percentage of tax filers is a bad metric? That's awesome.

I think that saying 'most of the people' are in southern states is incorrect when using percentages. 45% of a state with a 3 million population is not going to be as many people as 37% of a state with 37 million people.

CA and NY have the same number of people as TX, AR, LA, AL, GA, SC and MS combined (20.38 million to 20.54 million)

Almost every state is between 35-40%... so saying the majority of people are in the south is wrong. Flat wrong. you add in PA, NJ and the four are at a plus 7 million people over the 'top percentage states that are red'.

You don't know what you're talking about. Social Security is absolutely taxable income. Site me a link where it says that it is not.

He didn't say that. I did. :)

There are mny things in his statement that aren't true, but first we would have to see where he is getting his numbers, what kind of fuzzy math he is using!

so in other words, what he said may be true, depending on what numbers he's using........understood....

He said 47% of people don't pay income taxes. That figure includes elderly retirees. Just deal with it instead of being an idiot about it.

Also too, this is what you said:

Uhm... yes, when you are retired and earn no income, you don't pay income tax. Sorry you were confused about how that works. The key to understanding is found in the word "income" here. Now you are wanting to include this group into what Romney was talking about, but they don't belong in that group, because he was talking about the current workforce, 47% of whom do not pay income tax. That 47% does not include retired people who don't earn incomes anymore, they are retired. It also doesn't include dead people, they don't pay income taxes either. The ridiculous non-sequitur is YOUR claim that Romney was talking about people who aren't part of the whole, they aren't part of the workforce anymore, they aren't expected to pay taxes on incomes they don't earn.

Implicit in the bold is the idea that SS benefits aren't income. They are, as are other distributions and payments that retirees receive. Social Security benefits are sometimes taxable, as are other forms of retirement income.

It is true that 46% of income tax filers have no income tax liability. That's not where the trouble is for Rmoney. What's trouble for Rmoney is his opinion of those people, which is, like, fucked up on a basic level.

No, Social Security pensions are NOT taxable income, they never have been, never will be.

I don't believe that is true....I just doublechecked and there are threshold limits under which your SS benefits would not be taxable.....however, to meet those limits your income would have to fall under the level which would have placed you under the 47% limit anyway....thus, if you earn enough that you would be one of those paying federal income taxes, your SS benefits are in fact taxable income....

Keep in mind that's predicated on believing what Mitt said was true. That 47% of the population is dependent on the government. A notion I personally reject. So yea, you're right about the absolute numbers, but only if you believe what Mitt said is true.

It depends on other income, but 50% of SS is not taxed on those with other income under about $11k. For those over that amount 85% is taxed as ordinary income.

It sure is. My parents have to pay.

Do I have to pay income taxes on the benefits I receive?

You will have to pay federal taxes on your Social Security benefits if you file a federal tax return as an individual and your total income is more than $25,000. If you file a joint return, you will have to pay taxes if you and your spouse have a total income of more than $32,000.
Use the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Notice 703 shown on the back of the Social Security Benefit Statement, SSA Form 1099, to determine if any of your benefits may be taxable.
Social Security has no authority to withhold state or local taxes from your benefit. Many states and local authorities do not tax Social Security benefits. However, you should contact your state or local taxing authority for more information.

Funny how the entire speech was not released. I wonder... did someone perhaps cut out portions because context mattered?

That said, I haven't had a chance to hear what he stated. So my comments were simply in response to the dumb ass Ohioan on this thread. :)

Keep in mind, this was from a fundraiser held in MAY.

Why oh why is it being trotted out in September?

"Social Security is absolutely taxable income."

"It sure is. My parents have to pay."

Proof positive that this is NOT who Romney was referring to when he said "These people pay no taxes!"

Thank you guys for refuting your own failed point with logic!

Do us a favor... fill out the forms to allow scientists to examine your brain upon your death. It would be fascinating to discover how that thing has allowed you to survive this long. For it doesn't seem capable of even getting the 'breath in, breath out' correct.
