We unleashed more explosive power on both nations. Nuclear weapons simply take fewer bombs to achieve a similar result as conventional bombs. They aren't somehow special, just bigger. More people died in the fire raids on Tokyo than either of the nuclear attacks.

The freedom they hope to instill would be limited due to having to put down those factions that don't want their form of government. The fire raids killed a lot of people over a longer period of time than the nuking and still didn't result in surrender. That came about a few days after dropping the bomb.
