The name of USS John S. McCain was not obscured during the POTUS visit to Yokosuka on Memorial Day. The Navy is proud of that ship, its crew, its namesake and its heritage.

That equipment on the deck looks like sand/grit blasting type of stuff. If it is then it would make sense that a tarp might
be lowered if they're working on the stern, maybe getting it ready to paint on a fresh name? I mean if there was any
wind blowing (flag and pennant on halyard are blowing) this would help keep the particles from flying around.
Then again, might removing waste water.

It is not clear, in any event, if Mr. Trump even saw the McCain during his brief visit. He arrived in Yokosuka on Marine One, and addressed the sailors in a hangar bay below decks on the Wasp.
Mr. Trump said he would not have ordered the ship to be hidden.

I looked at the dozens of photos on your Google reference and found none with the tarp.
It had a collision, remember? If they were sand blasting the paint job to put fresh name on the stern, the guys would be
working under the tarp with masks on and the tarp would keep the particles from blowing all over the place.
