no, but the town is on tilt. In general though Oakland has a a high percentage of gun ownership. Not all legal of course but if guns scare a suburban kid in Mississippi he's not going to be a big fan of the city of Oakland.

Someone tried this morning (in the CNN article) to suggest that perhaps the cop thought he was reaching for his taser and not his gun. Apart from all the ridiculous issues associated with that, this was pure speculation and seemed to be a lame attempt to somehow excuse him. Good thing for cellphone videos!

A taser and a gun feel much different.
Even a taser would've been excessive use of force, but pulling out the gun is just an incredible act of violence that was completely unnecessary. I just have no idea what was going through that cops head. Maybe he just wanted to kill a "disrespectful black kid".

I found that suggestion (the taser explanation) to be completely ludicrous, something just made up on the fly by someone who perhaps wanted to be quoted in the media, clearly someone who didn't know the difference personally. It could be that this points to a fundamental weakness in the hiring system of these transit cops, too; what sort of screening is carried out among applicants, for instance?
This story just sent a chill right through me this morning.

That is outrageous and from the video shown, it sure as hell looks like cold blooded murder to me.
I hadn't heard of the incident until just now. Being originally from the bay area, I typically like to keep up to date with the goings on over there, but I missed this.
I'd like to ask cawacko to keep us abreast of the goings on in this case.

not surprisingly the officer and his family have recieved death threats. He's supposedly sleeping at a different place each night.
The family of the victim has made public comments asking people not to riot and they don't want the violence. Yesterday on Facebook a couple of people who were friends with the guy who got shot said he was a religious peaceful man who would not want this violence going on either.
Feels like kind of a power keg at the moment.

From the looks of that video he should be sleeping behind bars. I'm certain that from the video, we can't really tell what was going on, but that sure did not look justified to me.
