Time To Recognize Who We Are; Reunite America

Hello Dutch Uncle

I support space exploration.

But we can't pursue that very well while we are at each other's throats.

The parties need to kiss and make up so we can move on to more important things.

If only the political parties had parents in the front seat who could turn around and say: "You two will stop fighting, smile nicely at one another, and sit quietly as you enjoy the trip; or we are stopping the car to spend unplanned time resolving this before we get back into the car and finish the trip, thus making this ride even longer, further delaying our arrival and dinner."

Did you watch Dragon dock with the ISS? It's on the NASA website and the app. Notice the flags of all the countries? Russians, Americans and Japanese working together for science?

Agreed about the political parties. We, the People need to be the parents.

Hello Dutch Uncle,

The mental health approach to reducing gun violence is more than a matter of simply agreeing to it. It has to get paid for.

That is why I proposed a compromise.

Each side gives up something to unite around a Republican idea.

Since it is a Republican idea, Democrats give up less, because after all, it is a Republican approach being pursued.

Democrats give up on permanent restrictions.

Republicans agree to taxation of the gun industry to pay for the mental health care.

No. We do NOT agree on taxation of the gun industry to pay for your pet peeve bullshit.

No. We do NOT agree on taxation of the gun industry to pay for your pet peeve bullshit.

Better mental health care isn't a "pet peeve". If it was the flu it would be considered a national health crisis. While funding is an issue, the main problem is that most people think "mental health" is an excuse for laziness or some other personal weakness. It's the stigma of being tarred with the "Mental Health" brush that people don't seek mental health care when they need it.

Those seeking to ban or control guns while using mental health as a bargaining chip are putting the cart before the horse. Fix the mental health care, social stigmatization and related legislation problems then, after seeing where we are, address any issues with guns, shoelaces and high buildings.

The fact that two people of opposing views can have a discussion about America's gun deaths without making it about one another is pretty healthy.

The fact that the discussion is covering possible causes; and searching for solutions, shows that there is agreement we should try to improve.

This is a good discussion.

I would encourage anyone who can contribute in a positive and constructive way to the discussion to give us your thoughts.

I'll be happy to read all the responses which are available for me to see.

I would also encourage posts about how we, as Americans, can have more constructive conversations about more things, such as who we are as a greatly divided nation, and how we can have similar constructive dialog on any of the important matters affecting all of our lives.

Hatred is an emotion. Expressing emotions doesn't really help us solve problems. We need discussions about issues we face, identifying problems, searching for solutions. Looking for common ground. Building respect. Easing tensions; working towards reuniting our fractured nation. Together, we are stronger. We need to remember that.

Hello Bill,

That's the nature of a political party.

The party is a flexible medium which generally reflects the political positions of the members.

But it cannot possibly be aligned with every member.

Members choose to participate if they feel the party best represents their own positions. But they may also have some positions which the party does not represent, and they wish it did. Just as the struggle between parties attempts to tug and pull on one another, there is a similar struggle within parties by different factions attempting to shift the party one direction or another.

Over time, party positions change.

'Accountability'

Members of a party hoping to point out some incongruity within the party are only successful if enough members agree.

It's all an ongoing process which is never complete.

Why would some be a member if their views are no aligned w/ the party??

No, I don't agree..... They need to be held accountable, regardless of their party.... It is not predicated on winning~ I can't win enough support so I'm not saying anything..........

If trump was in your party would be you be giving him a pass?? Keeping your mouth shut??

My opinion is more than enough for me.
No amount of flawless logic would convince you, I would guess. Certainly not many who post here.

I don't regard these posts to constitute debate.
I'm too in touch with reality to think that.

I vent my opinions here and don't worry if anybody even reads them, much less responds to them.
This isn't a polling place.
It's just an internet forum.
It's many degrees of separation away from anything useful, other than venting.
So I use it to vent. I offer my wisdom to the universe as best I can with no expectations other than a clear conscience.
I do have that.

Perhaps you would not :dunno: I would none the less be interested in the reasons you believe there will be a revolution/civil war........... We don't have to agree.:dunno:

Oh, so now you want to reunite.

After the daily...hourly attacks on the president and his family, you want to reunite.

Perhaps you can “reunite” after cheering the economic loss of millions of Americans and their families caused by the virus from China that China failed to contain.

There will be no reuniting and Biden is not the president-elect.

The Supreme Court has not spoken.

Fuck democrats calls for unity

There can be no unity when a political party like the democrats willfully steal an election

Fuck all leftists who don't denounce this election fraud perpetrated by George Soros funded entities

I'm not predicting the future because I won't be around to see the not too distant future and also, I realize, that I don't understand how people think anymore.
When you get to be seventy-four, you may be alive but your world isn't. At this point, you're living in the next generation's world.

I don't understand why partition would necessarily precipitate a civil war except for one thing.
It's a mutually beneficial thing in every way except for Red State financial solvency.
The people who leach as recipient-state-residents understand that without being takers of Blue State tax revenues, they could not survive economically.
Take away that factor, and both sides come out ahead not trying to share the same government while having totally incompatible core values.

Unless you're in third grade Sunday school, you understand that we're not living in a "right and wrong" universe.
Right and wrong, even if they exist as actual components of life, play no practical role in our politics.
When people want completely different things, it's about what we want, not what's right.

No, we live in an "us and them" world. We're so polarized that unity would require the kind of capitulation that would bring down humiliation on both sides.

I see the United States as they exist now to be an untenable proposition.
The same condition that caused the partition of the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia exist right now in the US.
We have factions who don't ideologically or culturally belong existing under the same government trying with little success to do so.

Economics aside, Red States and Blue States would actually get along much better as neighboring countries than as a single nation.
Coastal progressives like myself share no common social and cultural values with Middle America, but if we weren't making each other's laws, we could co-exist peacefully as neighbors.

Economics are the rub.
Even with amicable trade, the Red States could never survive economically without being propped up by Blue State tax money.

Assume, then, that nothing can be done and we're going to stay the way we are.
Hating each other as we do,
and I dismiss as disingenuous liars anybody who suggests that we don't hate one another,
we'll rot from the inside.

At that point, China controls the entire world with no balancing super power. opposite them;
and the would be Pollyanna "unifiers" will have to bear the blame.

I agree, but fat chance. These people have the back, above all else including country, of an asshole, single term, impeached, serial bankrupt, fraud university orchestrating, hypocritical,
incompetent, corrupt, racist, liar, confidence man, criminal and cheat. They have been inculcated in Fix News lies.

These yokels need deprogramming first in order to begin to love America.

I gotta speak here...

I don’t think Trump won and really worry about how what might happen the next few months will but deepen the divide in this country. But to think that we (people who think like I do) are just going to just fold our hands, drop our heads and join liberals around the campfire singing Kum Bah Yah you must be smoking, sniffing or ingesting that which Oregon voted to legalize. Especially when your side continues to be condescending using references like “yokels” and “rubes” (another one I’ve seen frequently elsewhere) to describe nearly half of the voting populace (48% last I checked).

Many of us will continue to seek candidates to support keeping our freedoms available to us thus not seeking to remake our country in the image of that which our founders sought to leave behind. Hopefully we can find those men and women who are not in the image of Mr. Trump, but I’m not sure good men and women can ever win an election in this country again.

But to think that we’re just going to capitulate to the will of the Democrats without offering any resistance...that’s crazy.

I want to reunite America after they are chastened, demonstrate an iota of humility, bend a knee,
ask to be forgiven and renounce the criminal conman traitor who tried to destroy my country.

Until then, we'll have it ALL OUR way for a spell, assholes.

Well you owe us something for this shit you folks put the country through.... We are fucking pissed off. Now we won.
Remember, you reasonable and intelligent Republicans did not stop the Trump train, Democrats did.

So what are you going to do?

Well you owe us something for this #$%@ you folks put the country through.... We are %$#@#$% *&%$$# #$@. Now we won.
Remember, you reasonable and intelligent Republicans did not stop the Trump train, Democrats did.

I never claimed to be any more "reasonable" or "intelligent" than anyone, even my liberal foes. That's their modus operandi. But as to wanting to "stop the Trump train," why would we?

Once again, you expect for us to vote for that with which we, at our core, disagree just because Trump is mean and inarticulate? You offer Biden/Harris or, as many of us see it, Harris/Biden with their "mandatory masks and shutdowns," offers of expanding socialistic policy, undoing the work on the courts that Trump campaigned on and has done, restricting gun rights and trying to eradicate the culture that we embrace and expect that will be OK because Trump acts like a buffoon at times? And even though he acts the adolescent at times, many of the policies he pushed for, accomplished or tried to accomplish were policies that were the reason many of us voted for him.

But cry "racism" loudly enough every time something happens and have a terrible plague sweep the world...and blame the president for it, have every mainstream news outlet working for you and yes, you stopped him.

The Democratic party is going to win (Google "Blue Wave Map") because you have more people living in urban areas than live across "flyover country" (another derogatory phrase used to demean rural conservatives) which tend to embrace socialistic policies more than smaller towns and rural areas. So enjoy the fruits of your labor.

But I take heart that even though he was a poorly behaved president (I don't disagree...he was terrible at PR and many of us more reserved supporters couldn't stand to hear him speak and wish his handlers had taken Twitter away from him) and even though everything and everybody was working against him, a man of THAT caliber, who tried to support many policies I agree with was barely beaten in our system. So I will not capitulate nor will I encourage conservative lawmakers to just let the liberals have what they want without resistance. That might be seen as not seeking peace or lessening the divide but so be it. I'm enjoying the +8 and will campaign for more in two years, Lord willing.

So what are you going to do?
Continue to live an angry, incredibly unhappy life....sad he believes things will suddenly and magically be "ALL OUR way".... and somehow that will be better...
