The displays in the SCOTUS building are all inclusive displays of the history of law.
Correct! Which INCLUDES the 10 Commandments, of which Roy Moore erected a monument in the Alabama State House. Thanks for admitting the monument was indicative of the founding principles of western law!
Several groups approached Roy Moore asking to put other displays up in the lobby. Some were based on religions and some were based on laws. He allowed neither. And that is the point you are choosing to ignore.
I'm not ignoring that point, it is established in Alabama law that Roy Moore is the individual who gets to decide how to decorate the State House, and he exercised that authority, pursuant to the law.
The 10 Commandments gave us 'Thou shalt not kill', and 'Thou shalt not steal'. Those are the only two commandments that translated into laws. So 80% of this list did NOT become law. And you think that justifies putting it as the ONLY monument in the lobby of a courthouse that is to serve people of ALL faiths? That is ridiculous.
I don't think it justifies having it carted off to a closet, out of public view... no.
If one building had a sign that said "We welcome all white, black, brown, yellow, red and any other colored people", and another said "We welcome all white people.", would you try and argue that they say the same thing???
Please refrain from making inane analogies which do not relate to the topic of discussion. It cheapens the debate and makes you look like a desperate hack... I know you are a desperate hack, but you don't have to make yourself look like one, by trying to invoke some similarity to racial discrimination.
"We didn't require that students attend church or pray to any specific God or Deity! It was christian prayer. Denying that is ridiculous. Jews were included because we shared the half of the same religious text, and that is it. Every other religion known to man was excluded.
Can you not comprehend that having ONLY Judeo-Christian religious articles excludes every other faith? Is that going to build this happy little utopia you claim was ruined by atheists??
No one was ever excluded or told they couldn't worship how they wished, or that they even had to worship at all. It was a moment of devotion and prayer, done in a very generic way, without any dogma attached, without any requirements or pressures, and without violating anyone's rights in any way shape or form.
This man in Alabama was a sick fuck who murdered people. Using his actions to further your own agenda is twisted.
I don't have an agenda. You are right, he was a sick fuck... we are discussing why he might have been such a sick fuck as to do what he did. I think it may have something to do with cronies like you, who have stripped our schools and government of any respect for spiritual belief of any kind, and relegated us to a society devoid of morality.
But even worse is the fact that you want to blame everyone BUT the one who pulled the trigger. What happened to personal responsibility?
I don't blame anyone BUT the guy who pulled the trigger! We are discussing a variety of issues related to WHY he may have pulled the trigger! Some of you want to contend we need stronger gun laws, that was the opening premise of this thread! You didn't agree with that, but your take was, essentially, shit happens, and there isn't much we can do except shrug it off and move on. Perhaps you are right, I don't know... I just think it may be a good time to really examine what we've done with regard to societal morality and instilling ethics in people through education. We didn't seem to be inundated with nutbags blowing people away, back when we had daily devotion and prayer in school, and children were raised to respect life and have some basis for moral decency. It seems this kind of thing keeps happening now, where it didn't happen before, and I think there may be a connection. Surely you are smart enough to understand, if we make an effort to teach our children human decency and morals, they might be less inclined to grow up and be nutbags who do this kind of shit... aren't you? Or, are you just fucking hell bent on taking an Atheistic stand against religion at any and all costs to society? Despite what your common sense tells you here, regardless of what you know and understand, you are just going to bow up and refuse to acknowledge a place in society for teaching and instructing our children regarding morality and ethical conduct... let's just continue to rip, tear and snort at religion and destroy the fabric of society! Is that your position?
