If that was the case there would not have been a settlement here or in any case like this. Cops are not going to just hand over their money like the city can hand over taxpayer money.
It didn't pay Dink Floyd.
Cheaper to settle, and better optics. It also means the parasites can't sue again, in all likelihood.
In the majority of civil lawsuits, the defendant settles with the plaintiff because it is more economical to do so. The plaintiff will normally also have to sign an agreement to not pursue any further litigation, so there won't be additional losses in the future.
Plus, many municipalities are insured for things like this.

Not when it's $27 million. The city could have insisted on a trial and that would have taken years. And even if they lost the city could appeal and that would take years. Tell that to the family and they'd have said "ok give us $400,000 right now and we'll drop the suit."
And remember the family could have lost the trial and got nothing. It looks to me like the cops did nothing wrong.
Like I said, the city's lawyers and risk analysts concluded it was cheaper and better for their image to cough up a settlement, or the elected officials in charge ordered them to. Hey, it's not their money.
I wonder if there's a stipulated hold harmless clause in the deal.

Floyd was no hero, but he didn't deserve to die like that. I've always wondered how much hatred has to eat away at someones soul that they can watch a video like this and come away with the brainwashed belief that the government did nothing wrong.
