I am sure the nature of this fierce Ukranian resistance seems odd to weak Americans. The East Slavic nations have been toughened and fortified by centuries of invasions, civil wars, revolutions.
I am sure there were many calls for the citizens of Leningrad to surrender to the Germans, to end the siege, end the starvation, end the relentless shelling. But they told the Germans to fuck off. Leningrad is held out as the model of resistance to Invaders.
