Consider the following facts, Hawkeye.
The US Constitution is rooted in the morality of the "Declaration of Independence" (The DOI, by the way is a purely moral document)
The essential moral principles that are written in the DOI were taken directly from the work of John Locke, specifically his Second Treatise on Government (1689)
John Locke was an Enlish political philosopher who is still regarded an one of the very greatest, if not the greatest of the Enlightenment thinkers.
John Locke was a devout Christian (a Protestant). If his political philosophy could be likened to a beautiful, healthy rose bush, then that rose bush had its roots deep in the soil of Locke's Christian (Protestant) faith.
So, although the US Constitution is the set of man-made (or "positive") laws that the framers set down for the way their new republic would be governed, they were inspired by John Locke's Christian (Protestant( code of Divine morality (aka the "Natural moral Law").
So how did the US Constitution perform in practice? I would say that from the day George Washington was inaugurated as the first US President to about 1965, America was the greatest, most advanced, most powerful , most vibrant and exciting nation in the history of Western Civilisation (a civilisation which began shortly after 1000 AD in Western Europe. Western civilisation, more generally, was culturally superior to all other cultures that had ever emerged in the 6,000 year history of human civilizations. Western culture has two wings. One wing is Christianity (Christian faith), the other is the rationalism of the ancient Greeks. These two wings work together like the two wings of a bird that loft the creature up into, and through, the sky.
One reason that America is in a phase of (quite possibly) terminal decline is that it -a once high flying cultural "bird" (an Eagle) is now losing one of its wings, specifically, its Christian religion (its Christian failth and Christian morality). In my opinion, one of the reasons for this is that since 1965, the United state has been flooded with a diverse variety non-white, non English-speaking, non-Christian immigrants - both legal and illegal. The founders said that America was a republic created for a White (European) Christian people. Because these were the only race of people who could, generally speaking, ever acquire a natural, innate/intuitive grasp of the meaning and importance of the founding documents : the "DOI" and the US Constitution. African Blacks, Hispanic/Latino peasants, Chinese and all the rest of the coloured Third World that is illegally pouring through the Southern Border as we speak, do not and never will give a flying fuck about the American Constititution.
One the number of non-white,non-Christian, legal and illegal immigrants outnumbers the population of native White Anglo-Americans, its game over. The coloured immigrants will , of course, vote Democrat and America will become a one-party state (like California !). The Democrats will rip the US Constitution up into shreds, and that will be the tragic end of one of - if not, the - greatest ever Western civilizations.

I have been investigating why Christianity has largely failed. What I have come up with is that the main problem was that Christianity was on the wrong side of WW1....the religious elites were strongly in favor of the war and the people took that as absolute proof of the corruption of the faith. This was compounded when in the 60's and 70's there was a big push to make the religion cool and easy, which had the effect of removing much of what made it valuable to people. It reminds me of how the newspapers committed suicide by trying to entice people with graphics and likewise trying to be cool and easy, when what they should have done was provide value by challenging peoples current beliefs and assumptions.
BUT....I have not figured out if the West is dying because Christianity is dying, or is Christianity dying as a symptom of the West dying.....we have a chicken and egg problem that I have not cracked.
But yes, America and the West are all but over....make new plans.
