There's generally always an easy way out for people of principle. But it's not much of a choice if it requires them to violate their principles.

Socrates wasn't a spring chicken. He was 70 years old, and must have figured his life of teaching and dialectic spoke for itself, and there was nothing to be gained by tucking tail and sneaking off into the night.

Same here. I never really investigated what the ancients thought about suicide, and I don't think I want to!
