I know to non-New Yorkers, it seems like everything inside the city limits is considered NYC, but culturally, trump was an outsider. the trumps were from the outer boroughs, Queens in particular. Fred Trump sometimes invested a little in Manhattan, but mostly stayed away.
A "very old very connected NYC guy" would know nothing of how much a bridge and tunnel kid read.
