You say you're 89. You grew up and worked in a time when government assistance was an embarrassment and folks only took it if they absolutely needed it. No dad ever wanted his kids to see that he was unable to provide, and he'd do any work to get off the food stamps ASAP. Working to provide was far more honorable than getting a free handout. Today, assistance if perfectly normal and acceptable. Low income earners are told they can't do it without help. When they hear it enough, they believe the lie and get to a point of not even trying.

I agree with most of what you said.

Right now I am just having some fun arguing with someone who feels like arguing for arguing sake.

As I mentioned, I am a capitalist, but there are areas of our economy that I would socialize immediately if I could. It would greatly benefit our economy...and people.

I seem to remember saying somewhere that the more money the wealthy have, the more we take. It isn't my intention to bankrupt the wealthy. Just make things more equitable.

Let's say hypothetically that you and I have exactly the same amount of wealth, just in different forms.

Let's say hypothetically that much of my wealth is in the form of firewood.

Let's say hypothetically that a very cold winter is coming and you want to stay warm, so you spend half your wealth buying much of my firewood. Assume further that I stuff the cash in a mattress.

Let's assume that the winter comes and goes, and that you burn the firewood to stay warm. Suddenly, I have three times your wealth. You then proceed to confiscate one third of my wealth and claim it as your own, equalizing our respective wealth quantities.

How is this equitable?

In the end, Socialism really creates just two things:

Lazy people
Criminals

The lazy are people who get paid by the system in the name of equality to do nothing. They get an equal share because that's how socialism works. Those that do work do the minimum since they get no reward for hard work or doing their best. They get the same as the lazy do.

The other thing socialism creates are criminals. These are people who are energetic and willing to take chances outside the legal economy to gain great wealth in criminal enterprises and black markets.

Eventually, the legal economy collapses under its own inefficiency, waste, corruption, and overhead. The criminal enterprises and black markets become a major part of the economy. Where the country drops socialism, like the Soviet Union did returning to Russia, the top criminals and black marketers become the uber wealthy (aka oligarchs in Russia) in the new free economy.
