Physical materialism

Materialism posits that reality is entirely composed of matter. According to this perspective, everything that exists is physical, and all processes, including mental states and consciousness, arise from material interactions.

Physicalism is the view that "everything is physical", that there is "nothing over and above" the physical.

Scientism is a philosophical worldview that asserts that all knowledge about the universe can be obtained solely through scientific inquiry, particularly through the scientific method, which emphasizes empirical evidence and repeatable experiments.

Oh great, now Cy is hitting up Wikipedia again. And more of his blather about how much he hates hates hates atheists.

This is 100% what this OP is about. Cy's unending grievance against people who don't agree with his limited, flawed understanding of atheism.

You're getting boring, Cy. That's not good.

But at least we know you are still frantically googling and wiki-ing. Watch a few more YouTube videos and do some more of your "own research".

Queue the whine "I didn't say anything about atheism!" dodge. So dishonest. He's going to do it, you know it. And it's still going to be dishonest.

Then he'll start changing my posts to comport with how angry he is that I'm not letting him spew his hatred of atheists without resistance.

You will not be allowed to do that again, Cy. So buckle up. Or just abandon this thread.

Although I agree with Scientism...it's mainly a matter of having the instruments of measurement, I disagree with both Materialism and Physicalism since it limits us to the Natural Universe.

I think scientism, defined as empirical investigation, limits us to mechanistic knowledge of natural processes involving matter and energy. It's still one of our most powerful systems of knowledge.

OTOH, we couldn't use scientism to establish geometric truths, or knowledge of abstract properties like liberty, natural rights, equality, etc.

In normal space, agreed. When talking about quantum physics and other things beyond human perception, IDK.

Materialism does not explain consciousness.
Agreed. That said, the atheists think we're all just soulless meat robots reacting to biochemical and genetic programming.

This is why it's not a sin to kill an atheist. They're all soulless meat robots. /sarcasm :ROFLMAO:

Very few people can do calculus, physics, or biochemistry...so at the individual level, I don't see how science can be the primary basis of our knowledge. Most of the things we think we have knowledge of have nothing to do with math or science ..aka, our beliefs about liberty, about love, about trust, about fairness, about conscience, about meaning and purpose.

Materialism does not explain consciousness.
A physical materialist will say conciousness is merely the result of electrochemical interactions between electrons in the skull.

If materialism is true the conscious mind is nothing more than colliding subatomic particles.

That's never made a lot of sense to me. Mind, reason, conscience, imagination, conciousness must be more than just biochemistry. It seems like a participation in something higher up and further out.

Materialism does not explain consciousness.
Why not? Your brain operates on chemical and electrical interactions. Neuroscientists can map out the very regions of your brain where empathy, judgement, joy, sorrow and all the other emotions that go with being human.

Did you think our conscious thoughts came from somewhere out it the ether?
Funny, but Dawkins has been bilking atheists for decades now. LOL
Odd. I never purchased one of his books. Nor Hitchens. None of them.

Speaking of bilking, did you ever buy a Bible? Put money in the church coffer?

Do you think your consciousness resides somewhere outside your own body? Where would that be?

At your church?
Your psychiatrist’s office?
Out in the ether somewhere?

When your consciousness is “out there” somewhere, what does it observe? Does it send messages back to you to see how you’re doing?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Never bought one of his books. Never was stupid enough to buy a Bible or put money into church coffers, either. You probably have though.
Nonetheless, Richard Dawkins made money from suckers just like all those televangelists did.

Why do you refuse to agree they share the same mindset?
