Man enters wrong house, gets shot

do you believe that a person should have nothing to fear or should be forced to retreat from their homes when a complete stranger intrudes in their home? would it be better if we let the criminals run amok?

I don't think the guy deserved getting shot for being drunk and wandering into the wrong house. What about holding him at gunpoint while calling the cops?

normally, i would agree with you, but in this one i do not

how would a person know that the person in their home was drunk and without malice until too late if they were not drunk

however, locking ones doors is a better solution

I know, I am the same way. It just saddens me to think of a foolish kids life being taken for a bad mistake.

Me, too. I remember when this killing happened 20 years ago, how shocked and upset I was. Incidents like this are what make me long for stricter gun controls.

Yoshihiro Hattori (服部 剛丈 Hattori Yoshihiro[SUP]?[/SUP], born November 22, 1975 - October 17, 1992) was a Japanese exchange student residing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States at the time of his death. Hattori was on his way to a Halloween party and he went to the wrong house by accident. The property owner, Rodney Peairs, mortally wounded Hattori with gunfire, thinking he was trespassing with criminal intent. The controversial homicide, and Peairs's subsequent acquittal in the state court of Louisiana, received worldwide attention.

Of course; everyone knows that when someone tells the other person to freeze, that they're going to comply and would never ever attempt to draw their own weapon. :palm:

Jeez, USF - he's talking about a drunk guy wandering into the wrong house.

Are a lot of those kinds of guys armed in your area?

Oncie, while you have a point in this case, it is only via hindsight that we know this.

If you are awakened at 4am by the sounds of someone in your house, how long do you think you have to determine whether it is an armed intruder or a lost drunk?

I'm not judging, or at least trying not to; I had meant to respond to your post before. I get it, and where you're coming from.

For myself, I'm just not a gun guy. If someone breaks into my house and has a gun, I'm probably screwed, because they have probably used firearms much more than me. I'm more along the lines of what Damo was talking about earlier - I'd use what I had in any given room.

If I used a gun, I'd like to think that I'd be able to at least attempt to assess the threat before emptying it into a dark room. I mean, I've had relatives come into my house before. I just can't see potentially killing someone before at least having a clue that it was a real threat. I understand that this isn't possible in some cases, and also that I have no idea how I'd really react in the circumstances.

I asked before, on one of the threads regarding Zimmerman; but maybe I'll have better luck here.
Could you send me a pair of those special glasses, that automatically allow you to see if someone is armed or not?
The bad guys, in my area, refuse to wear the signs proclaiming that they're bad guys and whether they're armed or not.
Thanks

The drunk might take some time; but the armed intruder could take the rest of your life. :D

And using a weapon of availability (there is actually a name for it) is fine if you don't like guns. A lot of this depends on the situation, of course.
