8th grader suspended and arrested for wearing an NRA t-shirt??

The only thing I saw in the dress code was not to wear anything "disruptive." And the irony is that it wouldn't have been, if the teacher didn't make a big deal about it.

My kids' school system had various clothing restrictions through the years. One I remember was those wife beater t-shirts the football players started to wear. The principal said "no can do". A few parents (one in particular a coach's wife) threw a hissy fit. Another one was the length of mini skirts. They had to be long enough so that when the girl sat down or bent over, you couldn't see all the way to Munchkin land.

What kind of idiot sues over a school's clothing requirement or restriction? What kind of lesson's being taught, that if you don't like a requirement take it to court?

The lesson being taught is to stand up for fairness, justice and your constitutional rights.....its what real Americans teach our children....

Open defiance of teachers is not tolerated at schools. If every student was allowed to openly disobey a teachers request to the point it causes other students to climb upon tables and chant the students name it would be chaos and not an enviroment that is conducive to learning.

So if a teacher asks a kid to dance for him/her... the student must comply? Yeah, didn't think so.

A student does not have to blindly accept whatever a teacher tells them to do. If the teacher is in the wrong, they have a right to stand up for themselves. There is NO justification for this type of bullshit from the teacher. NONE.

There is the need for order in schools for the safety of the students and faculty.

There is also a need for the teachers to act responsibly and to not cause a scene because they wish to further a political agenda at the expense of kids.

I think arresting the student was overkill, but at this time I do not know the full set of circumstances.

Zero tolerance is the policies of most schools. There is a right and wrong way to fight the establishment and you openly defy the teacher and not have to face consequences.

Yes, we do not, because the school refuses to comment. The teacher was in the wrong to initiate this. The teacher should be suspended. Zero tolerance should go both ways.

ironic that it is many on the left that claim we are the ones being 'obtuse'. They insist upon looking solely at the reaction of the kid, rather than the cause of the reaction.

If the kid simply refused to take off the t-shirt while sitting quietly in a classroom, I support him. If thats the case, I am glad he got arrested because it will give him the legal forum challange the Constitutionallity of the issue.

The article does not say that is the case.

Exactly, but ONLY because the kid was wearing a shirt that supports a "right wing" agenda. If the kid had been removed from school because the teacher was offended by a shirt with the image of Martin Luther King on it and the kid refused, you and I would still be upset by it, but so would Mott and Dung. There would be no disagreement here.

Oh, Sty... one of my sons went to an NRA gun training camp and got an NRA t-shirt, which he wore to middle school with no repercussions. But if the school had told him he wasn't allowed to wear it anymore, he would have complied.

An important lesson here is how to react when you have been wronged. If you react by lowering youself to their level, or overeact in an unprofessional way or by breaking other legitatmate laws, you LOSE.

If you react calmly, professionally and peacefully, addressing every formal avenue available for redress befor breaking the rule intentionally... You just might change the world.
