A divided nation asks: What's holding our country together?

Elections are meant to resolve arguments. This one inflamed them.

Weeks after the votes have been counted and the winners declared, many Americans remain angry, defiant and despairing. Millions now harbor new grievances borne of President Donald Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud. Many Democrats are saddened by results that revealed the opposition to be far more powerful than they imagined.

And in both groups there are those grappling with larger, more disquieting realizations: The foundations of the American experiment have been shaken — by partisan rancor, disinformation, a president’s assault on democracy and a deadly coronavirus pandemic.

What's holding our country together? For me, it is the hope that something happens to biden and harris that prevents them from implementing their fucked up, warmed over obama agenda.

The foundations of the American experiment have been shaken — by partisan rancor, disinformation, democracy's assault on a president and a deadly coronavirus pandemic that was NOT that president's fault.

There...FTFY

This is terrifying:

“I would support martial law if that is what he believes he needs to do,” she said. “I would support absolutely anything Donald Trump proposes to keep the government going in the direction we were going in. As opposed to Biden running the country, absolutely.”

Many Trump supporters hate democracy.

"But now, at the end of 2020, many Americans say the experiences of the past four years have made them look at their neighbors — and their country — in a different light."

Growing up is hard. People react to change either by adapting or hiding from reality. Some hide inside a bottle or with drugs. I'm not talking about having fun with friends, but alcoholism and/or drug addiction. Remember the old saying "Drugs are for people who can't handle reality"?

I liked this paragraph: "But now, at the end of 2020, many Americans say the experiences of the past four years have made them look at their neighbors — and their country — in a different light."

As they should. It's good to face reality; to see people for who they truly are, to see their true face. Many people in America don't even know many of their neighbors except by their face and a morning or evening wave of the hand. Now they've seen the true character of their neighbors and are shocked. That, IMHO, is a good thing. It's personal growth. It forces them to face the reality of who they are living next to, who their kids are hanging out with and who can be counted upon an who cannot.

Fascinating coming from you lying, hypocritical dumb fucks on the left who thought division was perfectly okay the last four years.

Go fuck yourself, you brain dead twat. You people were sabotaging Obama before he was even inaugurated.

Many Trump supporters hate democracy.

Disagreed. They certainly disagree with the Democrat version of democracy: "Shut up, we know what we are doing". :D

That said, supporting shredding the Constitution and trusting Trump will be honest in a new election is not hating democracy. It's just fucking delusional. It's stupid, but most of the people on this forum are not stupid. Most fall within the average range and, IMO, slightly above it.

However, IQ isn't everything. There's education, culture, ability to accomplish goals (usually access to funding) and, of course, mental health. If I were to guess, I'd say the average age of JPP members is over 60. Nearing or well into retirement. Their bodies and minds noticeably deteriorating. Some fear for themselves but others fear for family. These fears are often based in reality but move beyond reality into fantasy, into phobias (irrational fears).

They don't "hate democracy" but their fears are making them do irrational things to protect it. Kinda like the "We had to destroy the village in order to save it" logic.

to add to that, i've seen just as many people get all stupid and look at their neighbors as an enemy, simply for being of the opposing party, despite not having expressed any hateful or bigoted views...............

most of the country has truly lost their everloving minds

True

An amazing thought is that if the House didn’t happen to be Democrat at this time the scenario Trump is planning for January 6th could actually overturn the entire election, scary to think now far Trump has taken the county manipulating the hate that common sense had preciously kept in the wings

if Demmycrats didn't hold the house would you still have cheated in the election?....
