A divided nation asks: What's holding our country together?

to add to that, i've seen just as many people get all stupid and look at their neighbors as an enemy, simply for being of the opposing party, despite not having expressed any hateful or bigoted views...............

most of the country has truly lost their everloving minds

Yes they have, but most of those are simply words, not deeds. You know well over 90% of people are 90% talk. How many have actually risked their lives for politics? A few nutjobs in Seattle. BLM to an extent but thieves and crooks began making them look bad. Antifa is like Evince; not real happy with anybody. They look on Democrats like you and I do; authoritarian assholes. The problem is they look at you and me the same way.

Most militias are equally silly. What have they gained? Two dead civilians, one maimed and a misled kid going to probably going to jail for manslaughter. A failed plan to commit mass murder and kidnapping? Neither Left or Right, Democrat or Republican have the moral high ground IMO.

The good news is that most people don't run their yaps; they're too busy trying to be honest and take care of their families.

Silly comment.

Expected reply of a political extremist. Notice how you can't explain why it is a silly comment? You just hate it because I made a small slight against "your side"? Teams are good, but the "teams" on JPP are as important as T-Ball teams. It's silly.

Which tailor your experience and headlines to keep you looking at the ads on the side. then you have a hostile media also keeping your viewing time by tailoring what you see first. your a commodity being sold to advertisers and they know that articles that confirm any of our biases will keep us there.

I have an ad blocker. Never see ads.

You're a jerkoff and a troll. Not more than than.

Elections are meant to resolve arguments. This one inflamed them.

Weeks after the votes have been counted and the winners declared, many Americans remain angry, defiant and despairing. Millions now harbor new grievances borne of President Donald Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud. Many Democrats are saddened by results that revealed the opposition to be far more powerful than they imagined.

And in both groups there are those grappling with larger, more disquieting realizations: The foundations of the American experiment have been shaken — by partisan rancor, disinformation, a president’s assault on democracy and a deadly coronavirus pandemic.

by partisan rancor, This from your post is laughable, the hyper partisan rancor comes from the left, and their dividing people in every possible way sex, color, income bracket, age, sexual preferences, religion, or lack there of! By their willing accomplices in the commie news offices across the great divide, and commanders in congress! The continual drum beat of the leftist media, 24/7, 365, anti Trump did not go unnoticed. You will now reap what you have sewn!

The republicans have hated our democracy for decades

They have cheated that democracy in elections for decades now

They scream about hating the government for decades

They have tried to claim we are not a democracy for decades

The Republican Party and Fox News need to die

They are the enemy of our democracy

Good God woman we are a representative republic!

I see, communists. Good point.

"But now, at the end of 2020, many Americans say the experiences of the past four years have made them look at their neighbors — and their country — in a different light."

Growing up is hard. People react to change either by adapting or hiding from reality. Some hide inside a bottle or with drugs. I'm not talking about having fun with friends, but alcoholism and/or drug addiction. Remember the old saying "Drugs are for people who can't handle reality"?

I liked this paragraph: "But now, at the end of 2020, many Americans say the experiences of the past four years have made them look at their neighbors — and their country — in a different light."

As they should. It's good to face reality; to see people for who they truly are, to see their true face. Many people in America don't even know many of their neighbors except by their face and a morning or evening wave of the hand. Now they've seen the true character of their neighbors and are shocked. That, IMHO, is a good thing. It's personal growth. It forces them to face the reality of who they are living next to, who their kids are hanging out with and who can be counted upon an who cannot.

Balkanizaton is the main issue, right?

Name one Balkanization success story?

People like to claim Medieval Sicily having Greeks, Italians , Arab Muslims & Sephardic Jews.

One big problem, they all became assimilated to Italian at their extinction.

$20 says most of the LWers on this forum, at least the sane ones, disagree.

RACE divides this nation more than any other single factor, and Trump knew how to use that divide to his advantage. But given that race in the US is such a divisive factor, many believe the future does not look bright. The percentage of whites in America continues to decline as we see the rise of majority-minority states. Almost half of 6 to 21 year olds in the US are Hispanic, African-American, or Asian, according to a Pew Research study. The US is projected to be minority white by 2045, according to the Brookings Institute.
The US will become minority white in 2045, Census projects brookings.edu

Trump failed to stem the tide of the Browning of America and reverse the course this nation is on, thus what was once solid red states are rapidly turning purple or even blue. But it isn’t just politics that are changing. Culturally we are no longer a nation that celebrates confederate symbols, images, or ‘heroes’ Sports and entertainment look vastly different in today’s American than it did just a few short years ago.

Post millennials will be better educated, more diverse, and less religious than generations of the past. The most diverse and best educated Americans of all time, so there is hope for this nation, and much of that hope rests in the hands of a more intelligent generation who are not tied to the racism of today.

We're getting like Brazil.

Most will be primarily White, with a good deal of Black & Native American, occasional Jewish, Arabic or Asian ancestry.

Still, sometimes Brazilians still see lighter ones as superior over darker ones.

What is solved except eradicating a bunch of cultures off the face of the Earth?

Race is certainly a divider.

Historical studies of oligarchy show the means by which they currently control power in our nation.
